A great zoo to take the whole family to. If you are local and plan on visiting more than twice a year then it is more than worth it to become a member. The membership pays for itself in 2 visits, so every visit after is like having free admission. We take our children at least once a week and they have a blast every time and each time we go they learn more and more to the point they can identify the animals by name. If you can, plan on going on a weekday and not on the weekends. The zoo does NOT have it's own designated parking and the surrounding lots fill up very quickly on weekends. For the weekdays expect moderate parking and lots of kids on school field trips. Also be aware that the zoo is currently undergoing EXTENSIVE renovations with updates to many of the habitats. With that said there are a few "featured animals" not available to be seen. There is still plenty to see and do. Bring water or a refillable bottle to use at the various water stations throughout! This zoo make not seem that big but there is A LOT of walking in order to see everything. Food and drink prices in the zoo are just like every other tourist attraction or theme park, very expensive. If you must buy drinks in the zoo, go for the refillable souvenir cups. They are $9.99 for a soda or $12.99 for an Icee which seems like a lot for a soda but you can refill it for the rest of your life for just $2. We bring the cups every time. All in all the Houston Zoo is a great place to take the family for a full day of fun. Just go with a game plan in mind to avoid any parking, heat, or hunger headaches.
