Long-time Supporter Disappointed by Recent Visit Over the past nine years, Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary has always been my go-to destination for showcasing Australian wildlife to international guests. We've visited five times, and I’ve consistently praised it for its intimate atmosphere and the passion of the staff. Unfortunately, our most recent visit felt noticeably different — more transactional and disconnected. Positives: The sanctuary grounds are still beautiful, and the range of animals remains impressive. It’s a much more relaxed experience compared to the busyness of Australia Zoo. The absolute highlight of our visit was the falconry show — the two women presenting were knowledgeable, engaging, and clearly passionate. Thank you for that! Negatives: Sadly, some parts of the experience have declined. The sheep herding show lacked its former energy and was let down by poor audio — the fuzzy microphone made it difficult to hear the commentary, and the $15 photo opportunity at the end felt like an upsell rather than an experience. Staff interactions were also disappointing: some were curt with visitors, and avoided the general public interactions, which they were so popular for in the past. Encounter details were vague and lacked transparency, particularly around limitations and inclusions. The biggest letdown was the koala photo experience. I brought overseas family expecting the classic photo-holding opportunity, only to discover this is no longer offered. Instead, they paid $80 for a photo standing next to a tree with a koala nearby. They felt misled and ripped off — and honestly, I don’t blame them. A small consolation is that $1 of the fee goes to charity, but more clarity on what's included would go a long way. Final Thought: Lone Pine will always hold a special place in my heart, and I truly hope to see it return to its former standard — where the staff’s love for the animals shone through and guests walked away feeling connected, not disappointed.
