We absolutely love the Houston Zoo. It's a very comforting place for us. It's always clean and has plenty of shade and places to rest. The staff are great, and very knowledgeable. They will stop and chat with you all the time about their area of expertise. The food can be pricey, but they allow coolers and backpacks, so no reason not to bring your own stuff. Bring plenty of water in summer. It can be very hot and it's a lot of walking, so hydrate often. Parking is free and easy in/out. Highly recommend it here.

I want to First say that if you don't go online first and buy your ticket you will not have access into the zoo because nobody works the booths which is very lazy. And secondly for three adults it was $120 to get into the zoo. That is the most astronomical price I have ever paid at a zoo period to get in. The membership price for a family was exuberantly high and didn't even make sense to purchase Secondly half of the enclosures where you like you feed the animal or like just enclosures of animals were closed. I found it funny when some of the enclosures were off-site due to the weather but those animals are from regions that are hotter than ours. I did not like the elephant enclosure it is one of the worst enclosures for Elephants I have ever seen. It's basically a giant cave with sand. The bird enclosure where you can walk in was a joke. It had like two ducks a couple of cool looking birds but overall it was a joke. There was a lot of enclosures at the Houston Zoo that were bare minimum I don't really care not really excited about having a zoo in the city type feeling. A good portion of the birds that I have seen at the Houston Zoo in other zoos are not positioned in the way that the zoo in Houston does and it's very frustrating. And their signs were very confusing. They don't give you a map when you walk in and the prices in their gift shops were astronomical. The food was more than a Regal movie theater. A pretzel was 14.95 a water in a metal container was $6.95. It was ridiculous a slushie take home you know souvenir was $12 and to refill it instead of it being free was a $1.99. This Zoo will nickel and dime you. It's not even really about the animals anymore I felt like the Houston Zoo was about greed. And I found that a lot of the exhibits were I don't give a iota of care. The African safari is under construction until 2027 kind of wish they had been down on the website I might have suggested going to a different Zoo. If you have the ability to go to a different Zoo like San Antonio Dallas Fort Worth any other little Zoo go there because the Houston Zoo is not it. I don't know what changes happened in the last 15 years but I definitely don't remember my last visit to the zoo being so crappy.
