Itinerary
Pass by: Hotel pickups take place in downtown Seattle between 7:30-8:00am
Journey north of Seattle to the Skagit Valley, home to over 300 species of birds throughout the year and one of the most incredible natural experiences in the state - the return of wintering migratory birds who flock to the rich farmlands to spend the winter in groups of tens of thousands. Bring your binoculars and spend the morning searching for waterfowl, shore birds, eagles, raptors and more who all congregate to take advantage of the mild winters of the Pacific Northwest.
Pass by: Home to a wide span of ecosystems, history, and wildlife, Whidbey Island is a gem just north of Seattle. Shaped by it's military history, current and historic bases are located across the island, interspersed with rugged coastlines and beautiful beaches.
Deception Pass State Park reveals a hidden pocket of rugged wilderness and unbelievable history replete with smuggling and shipwrecks. We’ll take our time beachcombing the rocky shore and exploring the forested trails that wind around with views of the Salish Sea, all the while keeping our eyes peeled for marine wildlife like birds, seals, or otters. After lunch, if you're up for it, challenge yourself to walk across the 180 foot high bridge that spans the width of Deception Pass for an exhilerating experience and unbeatable views.
Spend the afternoon exploring the diverse history of Whidbey Island, starting with a visit to a historic 120+ year old military fort complete with bunkers and batteries and the idyllic 127' Admirality Head Lighthouse.
Whidbey Island's agricultural region is not to be missed. Learn about the cultural importance of Greenbank Farms (once the largest producer of loganberries in the state) to the community. Indulge in a tasting of locally made loganberry wine*, pick up a homemade pie from Whidbey Pies*, or puruse the collection of art from local makers found hanging among the red barn's walls. There is something for everyone at this destination. *Food and beverage purchases not included in the price of the tour.
Return to the mainland via an iconic ferry ride across the Puget Sound (and maybe even catch a glimpse of the sunset over the water).
Pass by: Upon returning to Seattle, we’ll drop travelers off where we found them (or another preferred spot nearby).

Better than expected - Skagit Valley
This trip was much more than I expected. I mean birding in winter in Washington can be daunting. Our guide, Dan, made numerous stops to hit up different kinds of bird habitats. Adam was a great birder and not pushy or loud about what he saw. They put the best birds in the scope. Even my husband who isn't a birder enjoyed it. Weather cooperated and clothing suggestions were spot-on. I highly recommend Evergreen Escapes for your next outing.
Excellent tour!!!
My daughter, her partner, and I thoroughly enjoyed our excursion with Matthew Card. The hike was great, and Matthew even brought walking sticks, snacks, drinks, and a picnic lunch for our group of 9 on this trip. Matthew brought binoculars for the whale-watching tour at Anacortes also—many thanks! I was using his binoculars when four Orcas decided to breach. Wonderful tour, wonderful tour guide. Highly recommend!
Beautiful hike and excellent picnic
The tour was amazing and every place we visited was beautiful. Evan was very knowledgeable and passionate about the local wildlife and ecosystems. He made us a delicious picnic and let us choose a few places to visit at the end. I highly recommend this tour!
This Winter Experience is a Must!
I took a mid winter trip to Seattle and had a free day to do something outside the city. I chose this tour because I liked the balance between outdoor experiences in the Skagit Valley and Deception Pass and the history aspects at the military fort and local farms. We were able to see so many birds at the first stop - large white swans in the hundreds- took a beautiful morning hike along a trail at the park, and enjoyed some delicious fruit wines at the last stop. We had Dan as our guide, who was so knowledgeable about everything we were seeing, especially all the birds(!!) and really made this experience a day we will never forget. My friends and I really enjoyed exploring the old fort where you can wander through all of the bunkers, it really takes you back in time! I would recommend this tour for anyone looking for a fun outing from Seattle with a little bit of hiking, a little bit of history, a little bit of wildlife sightings and a lot of amazing views! Thanks Dan and Evergreen Escapes for an amazing day trip!
