I cannot say enough good things about Dave and the Fat Tire bike tour of Versailles. His knowledge of the history was both fun and informative, and he kept the entire tour moving while not pushing anyone too hard. If we weren’t leaving the country and had to fly 10 hours to get back, I would attend all of Dave’s bike tours. :-) Great stuff. Seriously. Top notch operation.

I rented two bikes from Unlimited Biking on June 28th for a 2-hour ride, using a special deal I found on Groupon. I chose this service mainly because of recent positive reviews and the discounted offer. The process of redeeming the Groupon was straightforward—no appointment was needed, and the staff at the shop were helpful and efficient during registration. However, upon arrival, it became clear that there were not enough bicycles available. Around 10–15 people were waiting, and we had to wait 30 to 40 minutes for a new batch of bikes to arrive by truck. Since the company doesn’t offer refunds or cancellations, waiting was the only option. I suspect the discounted price may explain the supply-demand mismatch; other locations, like Columbus Circle, seemed better stocked but more expensive. As for the bikes themselves: one had a faulty brake, which made it less safe, but still usable. The second bike had a loose chain and gear issue—it caused me to lose balance and even fall once while pedaling. Since we were already on our route, returning to swap the bikes wasn’t practical. Overall, the experience was mixed. The staff were courteous and did their best under the circumstances, and some of the bikes looked in better condition than the ones we received. I wouldn’t describe it as a terrible experience, but it wasn’t great either. If I lived in New York, I’d likely explore other rental services before coming back. But if you’re on a budget and flexible with timing, Unlimited Biking might still be worth a try.

What a wonderful way to see Rome! Ilenia is a wealth of knowledge and so pleasant. She also had the best recommendations for food and gelato after our tour. I would do this tour again in a heartbeat and can’t wait to do it in Florence.
