Top-notch Martin Luther King, Jr Tour
Amazing and so informative. Guide was truly excellent. I think her name was Zoe. She enhanced her tour with her drama background. You could see her passion and zeal for the material, and all three of us learned a lot. Highly recommend. I have now done this tour three times, and each time I have been so impressed.

Great history and food
Courtney was a great tour guide and we learned a lot about the history of Atlanta! The weather was rainy and cold but that didn’t deter us. The food was awesome and we highly recommend this tour!

I've written reviews for Trip Advisor for almost 20 years and I typically give at least 3 stars, mostly 4 or 5s, but this trip was misleading from the start to the end. Here's my review related to their description: Market Tour of the Oldest Market - TRUE, but as you can see from my photos, there's a seafood stall, a few meat stalls, a spice market, table selling Pralines, but nothing like any market one would imagine. So many stalls were empty! One person on the tour was booked for the Friday prior and it was cancelled because there was no electricity! The power flickered on an off as our biscuits came out of the oven. So yes, this place is OLD. We never stopped at FOUR stands, just the dessert one in the back and we talked to the owner/chef. Nic (without a K") walked us to our first place to sit down and eat (tables put together). Unlike what is mentioned, the food wasn't plentiful enough for a "lunch" portion. FALSE - 8 food and drink tastings from 4 restaurants (a hearty meal) - NOT True! I had two plates as shown in my photos and one DELICIOUS dessert! I thought about buying her chocolates, but I was hungry for more lunch not dessert. I don't know what 8 restaurants we ate from. Our drink tastings was a bottle of water - no sweet tea, Coke etc... just bottled water TRUE - A hands-on Southern biscuit class + tasting TRUE - An awesome and informative guide - Nic TRUE - take-home recipe card TRUE - Alternative Menu Options: Vegetarian, Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Vegan. We did "Cap" off our time with a hands-on biscuit making session, which is the only think I found worthwhile, but not for the price - AND it cost me about $20 to park in their parking lot for the class - so I spent over $100. I have visited lots of US and foreign cities, where even though I was aware of my surroundings, this place was sketchy! I did not feel secure doing this by myself and was happy to meet the guide, so I felt more secure. I didn't see any security guards on the inside of the place. Sorry to say, this is in the bottom 5 of ALL my reviews for the past 20 years!

ATL MLK walking tour
Joy was a delight. Her knowledge combined with the passionate, soulful delivery made the entire experience moving, interesting and fun. She was engaging, energetic and easy to connect with. I have already recommended her tour to several people upon my return home and will 100% find her again when I return to Atlanta. Can't recommend enough!

Grating frozen butter is a life changer.
This is my second tour with Unexpected Atlanta and it was even better. The biscuit making class was a joy and it was so interesting to learn about the history of the Sweet Auburn Curb market and the history of bread. I was fortunate enough to be hosted by Kristin again. She's great: knowledgeable, personable and fun!

Our tour was informative, entertaining, and enjoyable. Joy was an EXCELLENT guide. She contextualized Atlanta’s role in the civil rights movement in America, weaving together facts and history in a coherent story. Recommend her highly.

Mala is such a wonderful tour guide. We are amazing food, Mala provided a lot of knowledge and taught us how to make delicious biscuits. Everything was amazing.

I had a great experience on my tour. Glenn was funny and charismatic guide that kept our group entertained and engaged. Come hungry - you will be well fed and all the small bites are delicious!!! Highly recommend this tour for locals and tourists.

Joy was the guide for our tour. She was wonderful and knowledgeable as she told us about Atlanta's history. She explained how food was integral to its past. We stopped at two wonderful restaurants where we enjoyed fried catfish, okra, parmesan bites and pork belly toast. Everything was delicious. We toured Oakland Cemetery, saw beautiful gravestone architecture and learned about some of Atlanta's famous past individuals. Joy made the tour interesting and engaging. We absolutely loved her and thoroughly enjoyed the tour!

An abundance of JOY
This tour was led by the amazing JOY and she was a joy to spend time with. She was very knowledgable about the history of civil rights in ATL and you could tell the subject matter was dear to her heart. There were perhaps 10 people in our group and she remembered everyone's names which I found amazing! Don't delay in booking a tour with this company!

A local love letter to Atlanta!
This is an excellent walking tour, a real deep dive into MLK’s life in Atlanta and the history of Sweet Auburn. It’s a tour that showcases ALL of the neighborhood and the way it was during MLK’s life but also events that have had lasting impacts both positive (the King Center) and negative (building the highway through the middle of community!). Arielle, our tour guide, was so knowledgeable and passionate about Atlanta and sharing its history. She also offered wonderful food recommendations for after the tour. I love learning about a city from locals and this tour embodied all of that. Cant recommend enough!

Fantastic Tour! A+ experience!
Fantastic tour! A+++!!! Our tour guide, Kristen, was smart and funny - she answered all our questions and was a great leader. We were able to get a real sense of the history in this neighborhood, and we appreciated Kristin's explanations. The pace was great, and we got to know others in our group, which was lovely. I would urge anyone to try this tour - it's an excellent experience!

A step back in time.
It’s staggering to learn how much of MLK’s formative years were spent in the area explored on this tour. Joy’s thoughtful narratives during the tour explained how this amazing man became who he was. Joy’s a wonderfully kind, intelligent and entertaining guide who brought the tour to life.
