The Phare Circus was nothing like what I expected it to be. If you are expecting simple tricks done to upbeat music, come prepared for more - the show was an impressive combination of black box theatre and circus acrobatics. Without much dialogue, the crew was able to convey the personal struggles and triumphs of everyday people in Cambodia with great clarity and emotion. Their command of lights, shadows and stage movements also created striking imagery that will stay with you long after the curtains are drawn. Most importantly, the Phare Circus is really quite an extraordinary organisation. As a tourist, I was surprised by the lack of Cambodian representation in the arts in Cambodia. There are many artists that are inspired by Cambodia, but upon scrutiny many are foreign artists that are helping to grow the local arts industry. At the moment, local talents have not yet gained the same level of representation in a small but growing industry. At the circus, you will see not only stories written by Cambodians, but also music, dances and visual arts, with proceeds going to the training of more professionals. I am moved and impressed by their efforts, and urge all to see the works they produce. FYI, they put on a different show every day of the week!
