One of Romania's most iconic catsles and probably the most famous one due to the association with Bram Stocker's Dracula castle that was inspired by this one. It served as the beloved Queen Maria's favourite residence, so locals love it too. It's gothic exterior byild from river big rocks, bricks and wood is mesmerising, but I also like the minimalistic and quite humble interior. Well preserved, authentic, and quite small for a castle. It's pretty famous, attracting many tourists, so it can get quite packed, but you can survive as it's not that big - a tour can take about 1 hour. As a local, I feel that the extras (things for which you need to pay extra) like the time tunnel or the horror room are not worth it, so I didn't visit, and can't say for sure. Very nice ticketing system - we used the automatic machines at the entrance, visited in high season during summer on a Saturday, and there was no queue, it all went fast, a matter of seconds. I think you can also pay online if preferred. There's also a nice village/ folk museum with old Romanian houses at the base of the castle that you can quickly visit for free. Queen Maria's heart is found in the chapel (we didn't get to visit it, but it's worth mentioning that this was the Queen's wish). All in all, if you're around, you don't want to miss this experience. Memorable for sure.

The castle itself is nice and has a curious architecture but by now it is a total tourist scam. First you pay for parking way too much or have to walk a long distance and then to even see it clearly from outside you have to buy the entrance fee of 70 RON just to be stuck between school classes that move slowly through the narrow paths. I wouldn't recommend it therefore.
