The castle is a military fortress built in the mid-1400s to defend a mountain border. Being a defensive structure, it's neither large nor opulent, but it hosted the Romanian royal family on several occasions. It's obviously a must see, if you are in the area. The visit started very poorly- I paid for a guided tour but the guide never showed up. We were all told to go in by ourselves after waiting outside for 20 minutes. The inside of the castle is well maintained. I learned some interesting things about Romanian history. I don't recommend the torture museum but do recommend the time tunnel. It was an ok experience and I liked that they didn't overdo the dracula literary connection. If there wasn't the literary connection, it would not have been worth the entrance fee
