Itinerary

The Medieval Museum houses the 13th century Choristers Hall and the 15th century Mayor’s Wine Vault, in the heart of Waterford's Viking Triangle and is the only museum of its kind in Ireland and Europe that is built over two national monuments. This striking new building reveals the story of Waterford through the middle Ages and visitors are wowed as they go underneath the new building into centuries old vaults. On display are the magnificent Cloth of Gold vestments the only complete pre-reformation set to survive in Europe. It's the only complete set of medieval High Mass Vestments to survive in Northern Europe, which were lost for hundreds of years after they were hidden from Cromwell’s army in the floor of the then Christ Church Cathedral, the only piece of clothing to survive from King Henry VIII’s reign, the ‘Cap of Maintenance’, as well as the Great Charter Roll which was viewed by Queen Elizabeth II on her visit to Ireland. Take the tour with our costumed re-enactor, or use our multimedia handheld guide in English, French or German or just wander at your lesiure throughout the museum.

A Don’t Miss Museum

This museum is well worth a visit. The medieval artifacts they have are totally amazing the most stunning of which are the church vestments from the 1300’s woven and embroidered with gold. It is not a huge museum so maybe two hours max would be enough time.

Medieval Museum Self-Guided

Amazing collection in a gorgeous building with a lovely staff. Only bummer was no guided tour available on the day we visited.

Living history

An incredible experience. Hundreds of years of history in a fascinating chain which brought us from the pre-Viking era to today’s modern building. Thank you to Niamh for accompanying us on the historical journey.

Best experience in Waterford

I've attended a series of lectures at the Medieval Museum, but also did the walking tour, visited the museum of time, the wake museum and the Bishop's palace. I would have preferred at the Bishop's palace and the wake museum to walk around and explore on my own, but I did really enjoy the tours as well. I love the medieval museum as there is so much to explore, and I could spend an entire week in the museum, and still find things to see. The price is amazing, especially if you're getting the pass. It should however be made clear that the pass is for a year and that you could visit all museums within that year. The light in the wake museum, the museum of time, and the bishop's palace is perfect, but some corners of the medieval museum are a bit dark, and when I took groups they found it hard to see anything at times. I understand that is to protect the exhibits, but it can be a safety risk for less mobile people, and it should perhaps be pointed out that the next room will be a bit darker and an alternative route should be possible and offered. In summer the museum can be very busy, but in winter that isn't an issue. I like visiting in winter for that reason. The staff in all the Waterford Treasures museums are simply amazing, no other way I can put it.
