Sit as close as you can, and hold on!

We caught a Tuesday evening performance of The Outsiders during a recent trip to NYC, and it absolutely lives up to the hype. First off — this is a replacement cast, and if you’re wondering whether it still delivers, the answer is a clear yes. The current cast, led by Noah Ricketts as Ponyboy, is outstanding. I didn’t see the original Broadway cast, but at no point did I feel like anything was missing. Everyone felt perfectly cast, and the performances were strong across the board. If you know the story, it follows Ponyboy Curtis, a kid growing up on the wrong side of the tracks in Tulsa. It’s a coming-of-age story with love, loss, and a lot of heart. If you don’t know the story, it still works incredibly well as a standalone piece of theater. What really stood out to me is that this show is both emotionally grounded and a full Broadway spectacle. The staging is incredible — the entire stage is covered in what looks like gravel (actually rubber pellets), and it becomes part of the choreography, fight scenes, and overall movement. There’s also one of the most impressive rain effects I’ve ever seen on stage — a full, practical downpour during a major scene that’s just stunning. The music is exactly what you want from modern Broadway — big, soaring vocals, strong ballads, and songs that really carry the emotional weight of the story. A few standout performances: Sequoiia as Dallas Winston — absolute powerhouse on stage Sutton James Kaylor as Sodapop — brings a lot of heart and charm Emma Pittman as Cherry — strong, classic Broadway presence The ensemble overall is fantastic, and there’s a great energy to the show — it feels young, alive, and very physical. Pro tip: Rush tickets are worth it. We got in line around 7am for a 10am box office open and were first in line. They offer a special “Ponyboy seat” (you have to ask for it), which is actually used by the actor during the first few minutes of the show — then you’re escorted back to it for the rest of the performance. It’s a really unique experience and well worth it at ~$79. Most other rush seats are partial view, but honestly, even those are great. I was in the second row and probably missed less than 5% of the show — incredible value compared to standard ticket prices. Also worth noting: the cast came out to stage door after and was generous with time, signing and chatting — a really nice touch. Bottom line: If you get the chance to see The Outsiders, do it. It’s a powerful, beautifully staged, modern Broadway show that balances heart and spectacle really well.

Boring, would have left early!

Theatre is beautiful. Outsiders was boring. People say they loved it caus' they paid too much money to see it! The play only has one background. The rain and blood fight has been overhyped. Oh, and only one guy takes his shirt off. In case that's why you wanted to go... 😜

Put this show on your must see list while on Broadway in NYC!

"The Outsiders" was on my friend & my priority list of shows to see while in Manhattan this past May 2025, even before it won the 2024 Tony Award for Best Musical. Both of us had read this book many times growing up, & the story is translated so well as a musical that it did not lose all of the touching, heartfelt points of the novel. With excellent vocals, great staging, set design, choreography & an excellent score, I highly recommend seeing this show even if you have never read the book. Excellent work!
