Take a cruise from Killybegs harbour in beautiful County Donegal -(voted 'the coolest place on the planet') to the base of Europe highest accessible sea cliffs, to view the breath taking Slieve League cliffs, rising 1,972 feet / 601 metres out the water. On route we pass many points of Interest including Rotten Island and St John's Point lighthouses, Drumanoo Head, Fintra Beach, Muckross Head and the famous Giant's Desk and Chair which sit in the bay ahead of the mighty cliffs. While cruising close to the cliffs, you get a great chance to see the many caves & waterfalls which dot and cascade down the rock faces. On route back you will be able to see the table shaped mountain of Benbulbin in Sligo in the distance and the towns on the coastline of Donegal Bay. Donegal Bay is one of the richest waters in the world. There are regular sightings during the summer months of marine wildlife including dolphins, porpoises, basking sharks & tuna.

Itinerary

Pass by: On leaving the harbour, we are met with Rotten Island lighthouse which was constructed in 1838. It is still functional & extremely important to all vessel entering & departing the port.

Pass by: We can also see in the distance, St Johns Point Lighthouse, located at the end of the long peninsula, constructed in 1831 & also still functional & now used as guest accommodation which is very popular. We will then travel west along the rugged Donegal coast which shows its beauty from centuries of Atlantic storms showing their strength, firstly passing Drumanoo Head.

Pass by: En route to the cliffs we will view Fintra beach with its Blue Flag credentials, that then leads us onto Muckross Head.

Pass by: After Muckross Head we pass by Teelin Bay & onto Carrigan Head. Rounding Carrigan head with Napoleonic tower overhead looking down on us, the majestic Sliabh Liag cliffs start to come into view.

Pass by: As we travel around we can see the “Giants Desk & Chair” & this is leading us to the highest point of the Slieve League cliffs which stand at 1,972ft/ 601mtrs, making them he highest accessible sea cliffs in Europe. While cruising close to the cliffs, you get a great chance to see the many caves & waterfalls.

Pass by: On the return journey, you can see the vast openness of Donegal bay, seeing the southern Donegal towns of Ballyshannon & Bundoran, the table shaped mountain of Benbulbin in Sligo & the Mayo coast.

  • WHERE DO YOU PARK? There is plenty of parking along the shore. There is a free car park beside the Ahoy Cafe just opposite where the boat is tied up. The muster point is at the head of the breakwater on the Small Craft Harbour, but we ask that passengers kindly do not park here as the pier is very busy with new boats being built.

Slieve League from the water

Fantastic view of Slieve League Cliffs from below. The boat was clean and the staff was friendly. Highly recommend.

Killybegs Slieve League tour

This was a delightful experience! There is construction going on in the Harbor area so you have to walk a little bit further to get to the meeting point. Leave yourself and additional 15 minutes for parking and walking time
