Explore Château de Bonaguil

Discover Château de Bonaguil, one of the most impressive medieval fortified castles in France. Located near the scenic Lot Valley, this remarkable stronghold was among the last great defensive castles built in the country and has been listed as a French Historic Monument since 1862. Its dramatic ruins, imposing towers and superb hilltop setting make it a captivating highlight of southwest France.

A Masterpiece of Medieval Defence

Built on a rocky spur and protected by steep natural terrain, Bonaguil was designed to be exceptionally difficult to attack. Its sophisticated layout includes three rising defensive lines: an outer wall, the main fortress and the central keep. Cross a deep dry moat carved into the rock and admire the fortified barbican that once guarded the castle’s main entrance.

Private Guided Castle Visit

Follow your certified guide through the castle’s towers, ramparts and defensive passages. Learn how Bonaguil integrated artillery into medieval warfare, while discovering the architectural innovations that marked the transition from traditional castles to modern fortifications. Your guide brings the site’s history, former residents and remarkable military design to life.

Journey into the Cahors Wine Country

After your castle visit, continue towards the Lot River, where vineyards line the valley slopes and terraces. This is the historic home of Cahors Malbec, one of France’s great red wines. Enjoy scenic views as you travel through a landscape shaped by vines, limestone plateaus and the winding river.

Discover the Original French Malbec

Known locally as Côt or Auxerrois, Malbec is the signature grape of the Cahors wine appellation. Cahors reds are primarily produced from Malbec, sometimes blended with Merlot and Tannat. These deeply coloured wines are known for their structure, dark-fruit character and ageing potential, offering a distinctive expression of the Lot Valley terroir.

A Unique Terroir Along the Lot

The Cahors vineyard benefits from a climate influenced by both Atlantic and Mediterranean conditions. The Lot River helps moderate temperatures, while warm, dry southern winds can support ripening in autumn. Different terraces, alluvial soils and limestone-rich slopes create a fascinating diversity of styles, from supple, fruit-forward wines near the river to more concentrated, cellar-worthy wines on higher ground.

Winery Visit and Guided Tasting

Visit a carefully selected local winery and discover the estate’s facilities, vineyard practices and winemaking approach. Then enjoy a guided Cahors wine tasting, exploring the aromas, flavours and structure that make local Malbec wines so distinctive. Meet the people behind the wines and gain a deeper appreciation of this historic French wine region.

We did the full day to Bordeaux. Our tour guide, Guy, was amazing. He handled the more difficult guests with such professionalism and kindness. He was knowledgeable and interesting and never made us feel rushed. This was a very organized tour my only complaint is we arrived to town pretty late and were limited on options for lunch. This could have been my fault for taking pictures. Again, a very professional and organized tour, would recommend!
