Discover Colmar, Jewel of Alsace

Colmar is one of the most attractive towns in Alsace, set in eastern France in a historic border region between France and Germany. The city is renowned for its beautifully preserved old town, remarkable architecture, and museums such as the Unterlinden Museum, home to the famous Isenheim Altarpiece. It is also a key gateway to the Alsace Wine Route, making it an ideal base for combining cultural visits with vineyard experiences.

Highlights of Colmar’s Historic Center

Despite its compact size, Colmar offers a wealth of heritage in its historic center. Stroll along Grand Rue, Quai de la Poissonnerie, and through the area around Saint Martin’s Church, where colorful medieval half‑timbered houses line narrow streets. The town’s canals, elegant façades, and landmarks like the Maison des Têtes give Colmar a distinctive, storybook charm.

Guided Walking Tour with a Licensed Guide

Enjoy a 2-hour private walking tour led by an expert, English-speaking licensed guide. Your guide meets you at your hotel or at the Colmar Tourist Office and escorts you into the heart of the old town. Along the way, you discover how Colmar’s architecture, religious heritage, and wine traditions have shaped the city over the centuries.

Maison des Têtes and Little VeniceYour route typically includes the famous Maison des Têtes, an outstanding German Renaissance building adorned with sculpted heads. You also explore the picturesque Little Venice district, where traditional half‑timbered houses and flower-lined balconies overlook the Lauch River, offering some of the most photogenic views in Colmar.

Koifhus and Pfister House

The tour continues past the Koifhus, the former customs house located at the crossroads of Grand Rue and Rue des Marchands, once a key meeting place for the deputies of the Décapole, a federation of ten imperial cities in Alsace. Nearby stands the Pfister House, considered the first true Renaissance building in Colmar, with its corner oriel, covered galleries, octagonal turret, and mural paintings that mark the transition from medieval to Renaissance style.

Saint Martin Church and Gothic Heritage

You then visit Saint Martin Church, built between 1235 and 1365 and a fine example of local Gothic architecture. For many years, the people of Colmar regarded this imposing church as their cathedral (Münster), and it officially served as one for a brief period. Its stonework, stained glass, and imposing silhouette make it one of the city’s key religious monuments.

Alex was the most experienced, knowledgeable, and chilled tour guide of all the 5 tour guides we experienced. We learned a lot from him about the culture, history, and geology of the region. He also provided great context to understand the regions' wines. This tour to Cassis and the calanques was beautiful and would get a 5 stars if it weren't for the fact that this expensive tour did not include lunch. The wine tasting was good but I had better in Bordeaux and it included lunch.
