Full description

Discover enchanting Saint-Émilion on a private wine tour that showcases both exquisite tastings and captivating underground monuments. You'll traverse the cobbled streets of this UNESCO-listed village and explore a stunning underground monolithic church with your expert guide.

Experience guided tastings at two renowned Grand Cru estates, where you'll savor the region's rich flavors. With a small group setting, you'll enjoy personalized insights into the area's cultural heritage. Get ready for panoramic views of the Dordogne valley—this tour blends scenic beauty with a taste of fine wine, ensuring an unforgettable day in the heart of Bordeaux's wine country.

Most tours to Saint-Émilion follow the same formula: a château visit, wine tasting, and village stroll. This private full-day tour goes considerably deeper. Led by certified in-house cultural heritage guides — one of the very few teams in Bordeaux authorized to conduct visits inside Saint-Émilion's protected underground monuments — it combines two Grand Cru winery experiences with exclusive access to one of France's most extraordinary medieval sites. This is wine and history at their most profound, in one of the world's great UNESCO World Heritage landscapes.

Exclusive Certified Access to Underground Monuments

The underground monuments of Saint-Émilion — including the Église Monolithe (monolithic church), catacombs, and hermitage cave of Saint Émilion himself — are not accessible on standard wine tours. Guides must hold specific cultural heritage certification to lead visits inside these protected historic spaces. Most tour operators in the region employ wine guides or sommeliers without monument credentials; your tour operator is among the rare exceptions, with in-house guides trained and certified for both wine expertise and cultural heritage. This dual certification enabling seamless integration of Grand Cru wine knowledge and official monument access in one comprehensive tour is genuinely exclusive.

Église Monolithe — Europe's Largest Underground Church

Carved entirely from a single limestone rock face between the 9th and 12th centuries, the Église Monolithe de Saint-Émilion is the largest underground church in Europe — 38 meters long, 20 meters wide, and 11 meters high, hollowed out by hand over several centuries by Benedictine monks. Its scale is staggering, its atmosphere unlike anything above ground. The cavernous interior retains traces of medieval frescoes, carved Romanesque capitals, and remains of a bell tower that collapsed in the 18th century.

Y

our certified cultural guide leads you through the church's complete history — its monumental construction, role in Saint-Émilion's medieval monastic community, religious symbolism carved into limestone walls and pillars, and the extraordinary engineering feat it represents. Discover how monks excavated thousands of tons of rock by hand, creating worship spaces, crypts, and passageways that have endured for over a millennium. The guided visit extends beyond the church to the catacombs and hermitage cave where Saint Émilion lived as a hermit in the 8th century, providing context and depth impossible on surface-level village tours.

Two Grand Cru Classé Estate Visits and Wine Tastings

Your tour includes visits to two carefully selected Grand Cru estates in the Saint-Émilion appellation. Each visit combines a guided tour of vineyard and cellar with a structured tasting of the estate's wines. Saint-Émilion is dominated by Merlot and Cabernet Franc — grape varieties that thrive on the appellation's limestone plateau and clay-rich slopes, producing wines of remarkable depth, elegance, and complexity characteristic of Bordeaux's Right Bank.

Your certified guide provides expert context throughout both château visits, connecting terroir — the unique clay and limestone soils, microclimate, and vineyard exposition — with winemaking philosophy and what you experience in the glass. Learn how Saint-Émilion's geology, the same limestone from which the monolithic church was carved, creates the mineral complexity and aging potential that distinguish these Merlot-based wines from Left Bank Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant Médoc appellations.

Medieval Saint-Émilion Village

The tour departs from your Bordeaux accommodation and includes free time in Saint-Émilion village for lunch at your own expense — your guide can recommend and pre-book tables on request. The village itself, with cobblestone streets, Romanesque bell tower, ramparts, and panoramic views over the Dordogne valley and endless vineyard-covered hillsides, rewards leisurely exploration. Browse artisan shops, discover hidden squares, and absorb the medieval atmosphere of this living wine-producing village that has remained remarkably unchanged for centuries. The tour returns to Bordeaux at the end of the afternoon.

Alex was the most experienced, knowledgeable, and chilled tour guide of all the 5 tour guides we experienced. We learned a lot from him about the culture, history, and geology of the region. He also provided great context to understand the regions' wines. This tour to Cassis and the calanques was beautiful and would get a 5 stars if it weren't for the fact that this expensive tour did not include lunch. The wine tasting was good but I had better in Bordeaux and it included lunch.
