Full description

Discover the unique allure of Saint-Émilion on this exclusive Grand Cru wine tour, where captivating history and unparalleled flavors await. You’ll wander through the medieval village’s charming streets, taste exquisite wines at a renowned Grand Cru Classé estate, and savor a gourmet lunch paired perfectly with estate selections.

As you explore, visit the magnificent underground church, dive into the depths of historic catacombs, and marvel at the hermitage cave where monks once dwelled. This immersive experience combines luxurious indulgence with fascinating heritage, ensuring you leave with unforgettable memories of this enchanting French region.

Experience the most complete and exclusive private tour in the Saint-Émilion wine region: a Grand Cru Classé château visit with vineyard tour and wine tasting, gourmet lunch at the estate, and a certified guide-led visit inside Saint-Émilion's underground monuments — including the Église Monolithe, the largest underground church in Europe. This unique combination of premier wine experiences and exclusive cultural heritage access is genuinely rare and unavailable on standard Bordeaux wine tours.

Exclusive Access to Saint-Émilion's Underground Monuments

The underground monuments of Saint-Émilion are not accessible on standard wine tours. Guides must hold specific cultural heritage certification to lead visits inside these protected historic spaces — including the monolithic church, catacombs, and hermitage cave of Saint Émilion himself. Very few tour operators in the Bordeaux region employ in-house guides certified for both wine expertise and monument access. This combination — Grand Cru wine knowledge and official monument certification in a single private tour with the same guide throughout — is genuinely exceptional and represents the deepest possible immersion into Saint-Émilion's dual identity as both prestigious wine appellation and UNESCO World Heritage cultural site.

Grand Cru Classé Estate Tour and Wine Tasting

Your day begins with pickup from your Bordeaux accommodation and a scenic drive east into the Saint-Émilion appellation on Bordeaux's Right Bank. At a carefully selected Grand Cru Classé estate, your certified guide leads a private tour of the vineyard and winery, explaining the distinctive terroir — the clay and limestone soils unique to this plateau — and how they shape the character of Saint-Émilion wines. Discover the grape varieties that define the appellation: Merlot providing lush, velvety fruit character, complemented by Cabernet Franc adding structure, elegance, and aromatic complexity.

Walk through the estate's meticulously maintained vineyards understanding how soil composition, vine age, and viticultural practices influence grape quality, then visit the winery to see fermentation facilities and barrel aging cellars. The tour concludes with a structured tasting of the château's wines, including flagship Merlot and Cabernet Franc blends that showcase the estate's terroir expression and winemaking philosophy.

Gourmet Lunch at the Château

Lunch is served at the château itself — a gourmet multi-course meal featuring seasonal local produce and regional specialties from the Dordogne valley, expertly paired with wines from the estate. This unhurried, convivial experience in an exceptional setting allows time to absorb the morning's discoveries, enjoy authentic French countryside hospitality, and appreciate how Saint-Émilion wines complement the rich gastronomy of southwest France.

Église Monolithe and Medieval Saint-Émilion Underground Tour

The afternoon is devoted to medieval Saint-Émilion village and its extraordinary underground heritage. Carved entirely from a single limestone rock face between the 9th and 12th centuries, the Église Monolithe de Saint-Émilion is the largest underground church in Europe — 38 meters long, 20 meters wide, and 11 meters high — hollowed out by hand by Benedictine monks over several centuries in a monumental feat of medieval engineering and devotion.

Your certified cultural heritage guide leads you through the complete history of the church, catacombs, and hermitage cave where Saint Émilion himself lived as a hermit in the 8th century before the monastic community grew around his sanctuary. Discover frescoes, carved capitals, crypts, and underground chapels while learning about the medieval monastic life, pilgrimage routes, and religious significance that brought depth and precision impossible on standard village walks. Above ground, explore the cobbled medieval streets, Romanesque bell tower, and enjoy panoramic views over the Dordogne valley and endless vineyard-covered hillsides before your return to Bordeaux.

We had a very fun day with Matt to Mont Saint-Mitchel. Matt is an excellent tour guide & he cared for his clients very much. He's an on time person. We learned a lot about the history of Saint-Mitchel via Matt. He made sure we have enough time browsing this beautiful UNESCO. We definitely recommend friends & family this tour. Thank you Matt

Pascal was, above all, a smiling whirlwind of energy from the very start — bursting with knowledge, passion, and just the right amount of dramatic flair. He painted the horror of the Omaha Beach invasion so vividly that we could practically hear the chaos, then marched us through the bunkers at Pointe du Hoc like we were on a mission ourselves. And before we even caught our breath, he had already catapulted us back to Bayeux at invasion speed. A legend in tour‑guide form. Thanks from Croatian Team😉

Our Normandy D-Day tour was well worth it and we so enjoyed our tour guide Matt. He made the tour engaging, entertaining and informative. The tour was just the right size and a half day was perfect for us. It would have been much harder to get around to the sites and understand each without the information that Matt was constantly sharing. There was hardly a time that Matt was not telling us what/how/when of what we were looking at. Thanks Matt!
