Private Saint-Émilion Wine Tour with Gourmet Lunch Hosted by Château Family at Historic Chartreuse

There are wine tours, and then there are experiences that belong to a different category entirely. This private full-day Saint-Émilion tour centers on something genuinely rare: a three-course gourmet lunch hosted by the Pradel de Lavaux family at their historic Chartreuse de Bellevue — a beautifully preserved 18th-century estate in the heart of one of Bordeaux's most celebrated wine regions. This is an intimate, personal encounter with a family, their home, their wines, and their table — far beyond typical château visits.

Chartreuse de Bellevue and the Pradel de Lavaux Family

A Chartreuse is a distinctive form of Bordeaux country house — low, elegant, and symmetrical — built for merchant and wine-owning families of the 17th and 18th centuries as gracious retreats from city life. Château Bellevue and its Chartreuse rank among the finest examples in the Saint-Émilion appellation, and the Pradel de Lavaux family have been stewards of this estate and its wines for generations, preserving both winemaking traditions and architectural heritage.

Your visit begins with a guided tour of the property — exploring the vineyard to understand Saint-Émilion's renowned clay and limestone terroir, visiting the cellar to discover traditional winemaking methods, and appreciating the distinctive architecture of the Chartreuse itself with its classical proportions and period details. Following the estate tour, enjoy a curated tasting of Château Bellevue's finest vintages, discovering the elegant, Merlot-dominant style characteristic of Right Bank Bordeaux.

Private Gourmet Lunch Hosted by the Family

The centerpiece of your day is a 1.5-hour gourmet lunch prepared by a professional chef and hosted at the family table by a member of the Pradel de Lavaux family. This is not a restaurant experience — it is a private meal in a private home, with a host who has grown up among these vines and wines, sharing stories, history, and insights that only a family proprietor can offer.

Each of the three courses is expertly paired with wines from the estate, selected to complement the food and illustrate the range and character of Château Bellevue's production. Seasonal ingredients showcase the best of southwestern French gastronomy in an atmosphere of authentic hospitality and conviviality. Vegetarian and dietary requirements are accommodated with advance notice, ensuring every guest enjoys this exceptional culinary experience in the intimate setting of a family Chartreuse.

UNESCO Saint-Émilion Village Walking Tour

After lunch, your guide leads you into the UNESCO World Heritage village of Saint-Émilion for a walking tour of its most significant landmarks. Discover the cobblestone streets, the extraordinary Église Monolithe (Europe's largest underground church carved from limestone), the Collegiate Church and cloisters, and enjoy panoramic views over the Dordogne valley and endless vineyards stretching to the horizon.

The afternoon concludes with free time to explore independently — browse wine merchants offering Grand Cru selections, visit artisan boutiques and macaron shops, or simply relax in a café absorbing one of the most beautiful medieval wine landscapes in France. The tour returns to Bordeaux at the end of the day after this truly memorable immersion into Saint-Émilion's wine culture and family hospitality.

Alex was the most experienced, knowledgeable, and chilled tour guide of all the 5 tour guides we experienced. We learned a lot from him about the culture, history, and geology of the region. He also provided great context to understand the regions' wines. This tour to Cassis and the calanques was beautiful and would get a 5 stars if it weren't for the fact that this expensive tour did not include lunch. The wine tasting was good but I had better in Bordeaux and it included lunch.
