Itinerary
After discovering the history of the bridge with your private guide you will enter to Castel Sant'Angelo and to admire the historical development of this important place which has been first a Roman tomb, then a papal residence, fortress, prison, and execution ground, and currently a museum offering one of the most amazing views over the city of Rome. You’ll visit several rooms used by the popes. But beyond the amazing decorations, golden stuccos, sparkling marble floors, the castle hides a dark heart: the dreadful prisons, the most terrible one was inserted in a vent over the helicoidal ramp of Hadrian’s Mausoleum, a small room accessible just from a trapdoor, and another one in the floor was used to get rid of corpses. The Castel has also inspired several writers and directors, for example, Dan Brown in his best seller “Angels and Demons” You’ll climb to the top of the building to the terrace, where you’ll enjoy stunning views of the Rome and a great place for selfies.
Ponte Sant'Angelo, originally the Aelian Bridge or Pons Aelius, is a Roman bridge in Rome, Italy, completed in 134 AD by Roman Emperor Hadrian (Publius Aelius Hadrianus), to span the Tiber from the city centre to his newly constructed mausoleum, now the towering Castel Sant'Angelo. The bridge is faced with travertine marble and spans the Tiber with five arches, three of which are Roman; it was approached by means of a ramp from the river. The bridge is now solely pedestrian and provides a scenic view of Castel Sant'Angelo. It links the rioni of Ponte (which was named after the bridge itself), and Borgo, to whom the bridge administratively belongs.
