Excellent walking tour with John; museum underwhelming
We visited the Medieval Mile museum and joined an excellent walking tour with John. John is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about Kilkenny, and when joining his tour you can expect a very engaging walk including plenty of detail about the local area and not only a focus on the medieval/historical aspects. John has lots of local connections and it was fascinating to learn that his Dad was involved in the Smithwicks brewery (now no longer brewing on site and centralised in the Diageo operations). He pointed out different sites of interest including art installations, explained some of the challenges faced in the local area, and was happy to make recommendations for shops to visit (supporting local people and not generic tourist shops) and restaurants. The reason for the 3 stars on this review is, without the great walking tour with John, the site is quite underwhelming and could be completed in 15 minutes. There is currently an expansion of the site underway and there may be more to see in the future but for now, there is frankly very little within the museum itself. If you plan to visit, be sure to book in advance for a walking tour which is really what should be advertised prominently, with the museum as the additional activity.

Perfect tour for day in Kilkenny
Excellent tour through Kilkenny and Joe was great at showing us all the historic spots as well as letting us know of future plans for the area and museum. We were the only ones in our group so that helped keep it flowing and able to ask questions about are interest in the history. Would recommend when visiting!
Brilliant Medieval Mile Museum
We have visited the Medieval Mile Museum each September since its opening with 4th year BSc honours architectural technology students from SETU Carlow campus . The museum and the guided tour is fantastic . The museum is a world class example of an architectural conservation and adaption project. The guided tours with John and Joe explain Kilkenny’s development and history . I would highly recommend a visit to a beautiful place in a beautiful historic city.. The staff are very helpful and make your visit a pleasure. Mark Duffy SETU
