Itinerary
An iconic catholic place in the heart of the historic center of Lima. Has 14 side chapels inside. The main has the remains of the spanish conqueror Francisco Pizarro.
The historic chapter house of the Basilica of Santo Domingo was the place where the University of San Marcos, the oldest university in the Americas. One of the most worthy places to visit is the library that has around 25,000 books, some printed on XV century, among them several bibliographical collections of great value.
After the founding of Lima on January 18th, 1535, Captain Jerónimo de Aliaga y Ramírez received a colonial house in the elegant area near the house of Francisco Pizarro, the Spanish Conqueror, (today the Government Palace). Ever since then the Aliaga family and their descendants have lived in the house, thus making it the oldest dwelling in the Americas that has been home to the same family for 17 generations.
The Church and Convent of Saint Francis (Iglesia y Convento de San Francisco) is a spectacular example of Moorish-inspired Spanish baroque colonial grandeur, but the real highlight is the spooky labyrinth of catacombs underground. One of the best preserved churches in Lima, the Convent of San Francis of Assisi also has a remarkable library of antique texts and a tranquil cloistered garden.

Great personalized tour!
We thoroughly enjoyed our personalized tour of Lima’s Old City. Our guide, Mayrol, was outstanding—knowledgeable, engaging, and passionate about the history, architecture, and culture of Lima. He brought the city to life with fascinating stories and insights that we would never have discovered on our own. Our driver, Fernando, was equally impressive. Navigating Lima’s busy and often crowded streets is no small task, but Fernando handled it with skill, patience, and professionalism, allowing us to relax and enjoy the experience. Together, Mayrol and Fernando made a terrific team. Their expertise, friendliness, and attention to detail made this one of the highlights of our visit to Peru. We highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting a deeper understanding of Lima and its rich heritage.
Brilliant guide and sites
Our guide Gabriel was very knowledgeable about the sites and Peru more generally. We were originally going to visit the historic town centre on our own, but we’re so glad we took this tour instead because Gabriel’s insights really enhanced the experience. Very highly recommended!
