There are several viewing platforms here where you can take in the sights from different perspectives. On the walking trails you can feel the spray from Gullfoss on your face, such is the power of the falls. Thingvellir, a UNESCO heritage site is notable for two main reason. Firstly it is an historically significant location for Icelanders, as Iceland´s parliament, Alþingi, first met here in the late 10th century! Chieftains from all over would meet here periodically, some traveling great distances in order to discuss the issues of the day. Thingvellir is also important due to its unique geology, sitting as it does on the mid-atlantic ridge between the european and american tectonic plates. Iceland is the only place in the world where the ridge can be seen on land, with the edges of both plates clearly visible. 60 minutes drive to location. 40 minutes on location. 45 minutes drive to location.
