Private Bordeaux Gourmet Food and Wine Walking Tour

Discover Bordeaux's culinary treasures on a private gourmet walking tour through the historic city center with an expert local guide. Taste iconic regional specialties including canelés, Basque cured meats, artisan chocolates, award-winning cheeses, and Bordeaux wines while exploring the atmospheric streets along the Garonne River, past Place de la Bourse, and through the charming lanes of the old quarter.

Canelé de Bordeaux — The City's Iconic Pastry

Your tour begins with Bordeaux's most famous creation: the canelé, a small caramelized cake with a crispy exterior and custardy rum-vanilla center. This delicacy originated in the 16th century when winemakers used egg whites to clarify wine, leaving surplus yolks. Nuns at the Annonciades Convent combined these yolks with flour and rum arriving at Bordeaux's docks to create simple cakes for the poor. The canelé's distinctive fluted shape didn't appear until the early 1900s when a Bordeaux pastry chef completely redesigned the recipe, creating the beloved version enjoyed today throughout the city.

Basque Cured Meats and Artisan Chocolates

Visit a beloved local shop specializing in Basque Country delicacies from the region just two hours south of Bordeaux. Taste traditional cured meats respecting seasonal production and nature, including the prestigious Kintoa PDO ham — a dark red, marbled meat cured for 16-18 months in the Pyrenean foothills. The Basque Country also ranks among France's most important chocolate destinations, where cocoa first arrived in the 17th century through the port of Bayonne, the first French city to serve hot chocolate. Sample creations from Maison Pariès, a family chocolatier excelling since 1895 and recognized as one of France's finest. Taste their signature Mouchous and Kanougas, beloved Basque chocolate specialties combining tradition with innovative flavor profiles.

Dunes Blanches — Bordeaux's Cloud-Like Dessert

Indulge in the Dunes Blanches, one of Bordeaux's most beloved modern desserts: a delicate crispy choux puff topped with an impossibly light cream. Legend says this treat was invented when the son of a famous Cap Ferret baker, returning home after a late night, mixed a chouquette (sugar puff) with his family's secret ultra-light cream recipe. The result became an instant sensation, capturing the essence of the Atlantic coast's famous white sand dunes in edible form.

Bordeaux Wine and Cheese Pairing

Conclude your gourmet journey with a wine and cheese pairing experience showcasing the art of matching local cheeses with Bordeaux wines. Sample carefully selected cheeses — creamy varieties, bold blue cheeses, and aged hard-rind selections — each paired with complementary red and white Bordeaux wines that enhance their flavors. Your guide shares practical pairing principles you can recreate at home, demonstrating why Bordeaux's wine culture extends far beyond the vineyard into everyday gastronomy. This private tour ensures personalized attention and the flexibility to explore Bordeaux's culinary heritage at your own pace.

We had a very fun day with Matt to Mont Saint-Mitchel. Matt is an excellent tour guide & he cared for his clients very much. He's an on time person. We learned a lot about the history of Saint-Mitchel via Matt. He made sure we have enough time browsing this beautiful UNESCO. We definitely recommend friends & family this tour. Thank you Matt

Pascal was, above all, a smiling whirlwind of energy from the very start — bursting with knowledge, passion, and just the right amount of dramatic flair. He painted the horror of the Omaha Beach invasion so vividly that we could practically hear the chaos, then marched us through the bunkers at Pointe du Hoc like we were on a mission ourselves. And before we even caught our breath, he had already catapulted us back to Bayeux at invasion speed. A legend in tour‑guide form. Thanks from Croatian Team😉

Our Normandy D-Day tour was well worth it and we so enjoyed our tour guide Matt. He made the tour engaging, entertaining and informative. The tour was just the right size and a half day was perfect for us. It would have been much harder to get around to the sites and understand each without the information that Matt was constantly sharing. There was hardly a time that Matt was not telling us what/how/when of what we were looking at. Thanks Matt!
