Full description
This is one of the most exclusive wine experiences available anywhere in the Bordeaux region — a fully private day at Château Durfort-Vivens, a 2ème Grand Cru Classé estate in the Margaux appellation, created exclusively for Ophorus guests and not available through any other tour operator or booking platform. It is designed for serious wine lovers who want to go far beyond standard château visits: access to rare vintages spanning seven decades, direct engagement with the estate owner, and a gastronomic lunch paired with wines from three prestigious Left Bank Grand Cru Classé estates.
Château Durfort-Vivens: Historic 2ème Grand Cru Classé Margaux Estate
Château Durfort-Vivens is one of the Margaux appellation's most historic properties, classified as a 2ème Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification and situated on the renowned gravel soils of the Médoc's Left Bank. The estate produces wines of remarkable precision and elegance — structured, Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blends that express the distinctive finesse and aromatic complexity of the Margaux terroir and reward extended ageing in bottle over decades.
Château Durfort-Vivens is part of a distinguished family of estates that also includes Château Ferrière (3ème Grand Cru Classé, Margaux) and Château Haut-Bages Libéral (5ème Grand Cru Classé, Pauillac) — all three of which feature in your comparative lunch tasting. This unique portfolio allows exceptionally rare side-by-side exploration of different Left Bank terroirs, appellations, and Grand Cru Classé rankings within a single private experience.
Private Vertical Tasting of Seven Vintages Spanning Seven Decades with Owner
The centerpiece of this exclusive experience is a private vertical tasting of seven vintages of Château Durfort-Vivens spanning seven decades, personally hosted and guided by the owner of the estate in an intimate tasting room reserved exclusively for your group. Glass by glass, you travel through time — exploring how the Margaux terroir, the specificities of each vintage year, and evolving winemaking philosophy have shaped the personality and evolution of this Grand Cru Classé wine across multiple generations.
This is a depth of access to a single estate's history, archives, and rare library vintages that is almost never offered to visitors anywhere in Bordeaux. The owner provides detailed explanations of vintage conditions, winemaking decisions, and ageing potential, with plenty of time for questions and genuine conversation about Bordeaux wine at the highest level. You taste the same wine across different decades, understanding how time transforms structure, tannins, fruit character, and complexity in ways impossible to grasp from tasting current releases alone.
Gastronomic Lunch with Horizontal Tasting of Three Grand Cru Classé Estates
Your visit continues with a gastronomic multi-course lunch paired with a horizontal tasting of wines from three sister estates: Château Durfort-Vivens (2ème Grand Cru Classé, Margaux), Château Ferrière (3ème Grand Cru Classé, Margaux), and Château Haut-Bages Libéral (5ème Grand Cru Classé, Pauillac). This rare comparative format — three estates, one meal, side by side — allows you to directly experience how different Left Bank terroirs, appellations, and classification levels express themselves in wines from the same vintage year.
Your expert guide provides commentary throughout the meal, helping you understand structure, balance, tannin integration, and ageing potential in a way that is both deeply educational and genuinely pleasurable. The gastronomic cuisine is carefully designed to complement the power and elegance of Grand Cru Classé Bordeaux, enhancing both food and wine in an atmosphere of relaxed conviviality and focused appreciation.
Fully Private Experience Limited to Your Group Only
The experience is fully private for your group only, accommodating between 2 and 8 guests with personalized attention from both the château owner and your English-speaking driver-guide. Your guide collects you from your accommodation in Bordeaux and returns you at the end of the day, providing expert commentary on Left Bank wine geography, appellations, and the 1855 Classification system during scenic drives through the Médoc peninsula. This is Bordeaux wine education and hospitality at its absolute pinnacle — intimate, exclusive, and impossible to replicate on group tours or standard château visits.

Reviews
Great experience, guide was super knowledgeable and friendly. Victor brought us around the different sites and showed us so many cool sites
Alex was the most experienced, knowledgeable, and chilled tour guide of all the 5 tour guides we experienced. We learned a lot from him about the culture, history, and geology of the region. He also provided great context to understand the regions' wines. This tour to Cassis and the calanques was beautiful and would get a 5 stars if it weren't for the fact that this expensive tour did not include lunch. The wine tasting was good but I had better in Bordeaux and it included lunch.
Matt was an awesome tour guide. His passion for D-day made the experience that much better. He was very knowledgeable. Even my children were glued to his every word. Great experience!
