Ásbyrgi, located in northern Iceland, is a captivating horseshoe-shaped canyon steeped in both geological history and Norse mythology. Legend has it that it was formed by Odin's horse, Sleipnir. The canyon's towering cliffs, lush greenery, and tranquil ponds create a serene oasis amidst Iceland's rugged landscape. Visitors can explore hiking trails leading to panoramic viewpoints, including Botnstjörn, a picturesque lake at the canyon's heart. Ásbyrgi's rich cultural heritage, intertwined with Norse folklore, adds to its allure. A visit to Ásbyrgi promises an unforgettable journey into nature and mythology, leaving visitors captivated by its beauty and mystique.
Dettifoss, Europe's mightiest waterfall, captivates visitors with its thunderous roar and awe-inspiring power. Standing 44 meters tall and stretching 100 meters wide, it creates a mesmerizing spectacle as glacial meltwater cascades over its edge. Accessible via well-maintained trails, visitors can admire Dettifoss from various viewpoints, each offering a unique perspective of this natural wonder. Surrounding the waterfall, Jökulsárgljúfur Canyon boasts geological marvels and cultural significance, inviting exploration. For photographers, Dettifoss offers endless opportunities to capture the raw beauty of nature against Iceland's dramatic backdrop. Visiting Dettifoss is an unforgettable experience, immersing you in the raw power and beauty of one of Earth's most captivating phenomena.
Námaskarð, nestled in northeastern Iceland, is a captivating geothermal area offering an otherworldly experience. As you explore, you'll encounter steam vents, bubbling mud pots, and vibrant mineral deposits. The landscape, resembling scenes from a sci-fi film, is traversed by boardwalks allowing safe access to the geothermal wonders. Despite its harsh appearance, Námaskarð is teeming with life, showcasing the resilience of organisms thriving in extreme conditions. Visiting Námaskarð promises a unique and unforgettable adventure for nature enthusiasts and curious travelers alike.

Cancelled at the last minute
The July 17, 2025 visit was cancelled at the last minute while we were waiting on the dock in Husavík. The local operator told us that the tour was cancelled by Viator on July 1. Trip Advisor still took payment on the 15th and issued the tickets. No possibility to book another visit the same day. Lost day.
Iceland, how did it come about ...
A quick run through the Icelandic origin story of 20 million years ago using practical examples. Our guide explained well and drew attention to the scenic features during our tour of the so-called “S.g. Diamond Cycles from Husvik alert. Somehow time had passed quickly, so that in the end no longer a stop at Lake Mygatan was possible. A phototop with a view from above then had to do it. Overall recommended to better understand Iceland.
Very nice but without Godafoss
Very nice route. However, the Dettifoss waterfall is approached from the other side than the one shown. So you can't climb that close to him. Still nice. I would have preferred to leave the lake to the left and see Godafoss instead.
