Came for the lights festival - the tour guide was knowledgeable and gave loads of great information about the history surrounding the canals. The light 'sculptures' looked great at night and you could really see them for how the artist designed them - does get very cold though. We opted for the open top boat with the hot chocolate/mulled wine - you are given a blanket but it doesn't brave well against the harsh Amsterdam cold!

To get a comprehensive idea about the architecture of the city, the landmarks, I recommend to get the Canal tour. I had it twice, once in winter and once at spring and both were beautiful. The guided tour offers explanation in English. The hosts were very friendly.
