Amazing. Loved it. Just one thing I was given the middle seat and that felt a bit unfair because I paid the same amount as others. They should distribute people in a way that everyone gets a window seat to enjoy.

I have mixed feelings about our tour with Papillion helicopters. We were originally booked for a noon start and received a call that morning that we were being moved to a 1 o’clock flight because there weren’t enough people on our flight to justify the tour. The 1 o’clock flight included a couple that had paid for a private tour. They weren’t thrilled to find out they weren’t going to get a private tour because we were there. At 1 o’clock, we were called out to our helicopter and started to board. The couple with the private tour got the front seats. We were in the back. There was a maintenance problem with the helicopter which they found as we boarded and after a few minutes, we went back into the waiting room while they prepped another helicopter. They made the right choice in changing helicopters. They could have canceled our flight and they did not, kudos for them for doing that. It turns out that this second helicopter was being used to train a new pilot. An experienced pilot sat in the front seat next to the trainee. They put all of the passengers in the backseat. Again, a little awkward for us because the other couple had paid for a private flight and now we were all crammed together in the back. The biggest problem was that there was no pilot narration on the flight. The experienced pilot was working with the trainee and not communicating with us. They did have music, and they did play a tape explaining the history of the Grand Canyon, but no explanation of individual areas we were flying across. This was one reason I downgraded them to a four star. They should’ve taken the trainee out on an empty flight. This was clearly her first time flying with this company. She didn’t even know the route she was flying. She was a competent pilot, however. Last reason for the four star is that they did not fly the route advertised. I used my watch to track the flight and they flew over the less interesting eastern side, not over the part of the Grand Canyon I expected to see. A little false adverting on their part. They did try to make things right by giving us a free photo. And they were very polite throughout. A four star experience given the situation.
