Go at night!
I booked the VIP for a Friday night at 9:00pm anticipating long lines but surprisingly it was not crowded or busy so that made our visit much more enjoyable. I’m a native New Yorker and have accompanied many visitors to the ESB but mostly during the day. I think the nighttime vibe is a more “New Yorker” experience.

The premier NYC observatory.
The premier observatory of the big 5 in NYC, not the highest but the best central location. I'd recommend you get a flexible entry time ticket, bypass the line, and with the extra money you are spending here, you can save a few bucks by not going to the 102nd floor. For pure photo buffs like me, the extra layer of glass on the 102nd. will degrade your photos slightly and many times the higher vantage point isn't conducive to great city shots. Stick with the open deck of the 86th floor, and if you can - time it for an hour or so before sunset so you don't get that glare of the southern sky. Upon exiting, check out the grand art deco mural in the lobby, and stylish elevator doors.

Exceptional visit
Beautiful structure, full of history. We were surprised it was so quiet when we visited on a Saturday morning in May. So pleased we made this visit and lots to see inside as well as take in the views.
