Smooth and positive experience

The captain and crew were excellent! We had a wonderful sunset sail and truly enjoyed the conversations, cocktails and beautiful sights. I’d highly recommend taking a sail. You won’t be disappointed!!

Took our daughter and nine friends for a sail to celebrate her 13th birthday. Crew and captain were amazing, wishing her a happy birthday and taking a group photo for us with them at the wheel. Super fun and relaxing. Girls just chatted the whole time, everyone got a soda and they hung out together outside (in the sunshine!) and enjoyed the scenery. Some of them even helped hoist the sails! 13/10.

If I could give more than 5 stars I would! I found out about Sunset Salem once we got into town and decided to book a sunset cruise on the When & If last minute. I'm so glad that I did! My husband and I both agree it was one (if not the top) favorite things of our entire trip. The crew was so friendly and knowledgeable not only about the boat itself but the history of Salem and neighboring areas. They treated us like family. The crew asked if anyone wanted to help raise the sails which made both kids and kids at heart (like my husband) on the boat very happy. JP made fantastic cocktails (including a delicious mocktail he made just for me since I am pregnant and we were celebrating our babymoon). We were surrounded by beautiful views the entire time. I also found the price very reasonable. I try to visit Salem every few years and will definitely be making sure this is on the itinerary every trip! My only wish is that I would have found it sooner. Thank you for the wonderful experience!

I want to sail every day!! Zach, Kass and JP were just amazing and so much fun!! My only complaint was that it was over too soon! They made us feel so welcome and I am ready if you need extra hands crew! If you are thinking about going on one of their cruises, stop thinking and do it!!

My husband and I went on the tour tonight (7/15/26) for our 20th wedding anniversary. Hands down the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. The boat is absolutely beautiful and well kept. The Captain and crew, a lovely trio. The environment was light, relaxing, and quite fun. As for the bar and cocktails we both got, delicious. I would recommend bringing a light jacket or hoodie, cause it can get a little chilly.

We are so thankful we were able to join and set sail on the Malabar X with Zach, Yoshi, and Freddo! We’d accidentally booked for a different date but they were able to accommodate us and fit us in for the most wonderful water excursion ever! They were the most wonderful hosts/sailors with plenty of knowledge and great bartenders. We enjoyed the views and would 10/10 recommend joining this trip. They are so passionate and make the Salem experience 100% enjoyable as our final destination for the day. The sunset and the wind were so relaxing on the seas. If we ever come again and book for the correct date, I hope we get to spend it with this savvy crew once again. ☺️❤️

We set sail on the Malabar X with Zach, Yoshi, and Freddo! They were wonderful hosts/sailors! Fun and inviting! 10/10 would recommend! They truly love what they do and care about others enjoying the passion of setting sail on the seas.

This. Is. An. Absolute. Must. Not only was the crew friendly, and knowledgeable about the craft, the whole experience is a blast. It was my wife's and I honeymoon, and for wanting to relax for a few hours, and have a drink or two, nothing beats this. They had a history book of the ship and it's history is amazing. And the crew knew it too. And of course, I can not leave this review without commenting on J.P. Jean Pierre. The best first man, bartender, medic, plumber, everything man, there is in the area. Not only was I completely confident in his abilities, when my wife dropped her phone in the harbor, this man immediately grabbed his trunks, his mask, and dove in for it, finding it on the first try. Soaking wet from the VERY cold water, he said "Its not my first time." May this be my thank you to him, and for any owners reading this, please give him a raise. He works very hard. My only recommendations is just to call in and ask how many people will be on the ship the day off. They picked up for me on the second ring. Overall a 10 outta 10 experience, and if Im in Salem again, I will be doing this. Thank you :)

This was absolutely the highlight of our trip! I’ve been trying for three years to get out to Salem in the summer and sail on the Fame, and found out two weeks before our trip the Fame had moved to Boston. Quick change of plans: bought tickets for Sunset Sail on the Malabar X. My mom was a little freaked out that we’d get seasick, absolutely no one had that experience. Gorgeous weather, gorgeous boat, super friendly crew, and now I know why my cousin loves sailing! Bonus was one of the brand new crew members was being trained so we positioned ourselves close by to hear all the instructions. It was SO INTERESTING!! Crew member Kass (I hope I spelled that right) was freaking awesome, she was so informative and clearly loves her job. We don’t visit Salem often in the summer, but when we do we will be on this boat. Side note, the bathroom on the ship wasn’t working and the public ones on land were closed when we got there for the sunset cruise, so plan accordingly.

The perfect way to end a day. Kass & Fredo were incredibly helpful, knowledge and the whole crew provided history of the ship. Captain Jim sailed with expertise and a smile. One of the best highlights of Salem.

This was the absolute highlight of our trip to Salem! The When and If Schooner is a gorgeous piece of history cared for by a caring, professional, and exuberant crew who are passionate about sharing their love of tall ship sailing with everyone! We were welcomed and instructed in emergency procedures and basics of sailing when we boarded and soon we were invited to help raise the sails! It was amazing to work with the crew to get her underway! Definitely a once in a lifetime chance. We were offered wool blankets to take the chill off and invited to walk about the deck, take a turn at the wheel, and visit the cabins below deck as we sailed. The crew shared stores with off, offered us history of the area and an adult beverage, including hot spiked cider. There were only 8 guests sailing with the crew of 3, so we all got to visit, talk, learn, and hoist as we sailed the harbor and admired the sunset for 2 hours. I would strongly recommend this opportunity to everyone and anyone. 1939 wooden tall ships are a piece of history that you can enjoy today.
