Bran Castle is known worldwide as “Dracula’s Castle,” but for Romanians, it’s first and foremost a symbol of history and heritage, not just legend. The castle was built in 1377, when King Louis I of Hungary granted the Saxons of Brasov the right to construct a stone fortress to defend the mountain pass between Transylvania and Wallachia. Due to its strategic location, Bran Castle served over the centuries as a military stronghold, customs post, and defensive fortress against invading forces. Although it’s often associated with Vlad the Impaler (Vlad Tepes), the historical figure who inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula, but there is no evidence that Vlad ever lived or ruled from Bran Castle. However, it’s possible he passed through or was temporarily held there during one of his conflicts with the Saxons of Brașov. In the early 20th century, the castle became a royal residence. It was offered as a gift to Queen Marie of Romania in 1920, who restored and decorated it, turning it into one of her favorite retreats. Today, visitors can admire the royal chambers, including the room where Queen Marie once slept, along with numerous artifacts, furniture, and jewelry that tell the story of the place. There’s truly no “off-season” for visiting Bran Castle, it’s one of Romania’s most popular landmarks and is almost always lively. I recommend buying your tickets online to avoid the line at the ticket counter, though you might still have to wait a bit at the entrance. Prepare yourself to step back in time, through narrow hallways, winding stairs, and hidden passages, and experience a mix of legend and history that makes Bran Castle truly unique!

I knew it would feel like a tourist trap but we still went there. Queues were awful and once inside it is not impressive at all. I gave 2 stars based on the fact that there is some history, the well kept gardens and the satisfactory toilets ( even it was so crowded!) So if you are in Romania and you are planning to visit, be prepared to be disappointed.
