A very slick operator flying Robinson R66 helicopters from Nusa Dua and Canggu (from which you can do circuits along the coast to the Tanah Lot ocean temple). The southernmost base sells 10m and 15m joyrides round the Bukit peninsula and longer excursions. We chose the 15m scenic flight to take in a longer section of the stunning Bukit coastline. The extra 5 minutes crosses the coast around Bingin Beach then tracks south past Uluwatu temple and the strange sight of a Boeing 737 parked on the clifftops above Nyang Nyang beach. It has been converted into a luxury hotel. On calm days you can see manta rays out in the ocean. We were hoping to drop down for a bit of wave-skimming at 200 km/h as shown on the Balicopter website video. Our pilot told us that while they used to do this, the Indonesian authorities no longer allow low-level flying. It would be better if Balicopter removes its low-level video to avoid misleading anyone. That said, the views from 1,000 feet are spectacular and this must be one of the most beautiful places in the world in which to take a ride in a helicopter. Bali has several helitour operators. Fly Bali is cheaper than Balicopter and gets more bookings but makes heavy use of an 18-year-old Bell Long Ranger. Balicopter’s Robinson R66 Turbine Marine helicopters are 4 years old (PK-VPX) and 1 year old (PK-VPY) respectively. There is also a 4-year-old R66 Turbine (non-Marine PK-VPN). The co-owner and CEO Andrey Astashkin, a Russian national, presumably has the deep pockets required to feed this money-hungry enterprise. The R66 Turbine Marine configuration includes pop-out floats for emergency landings on water. We booked a tour with the company and could not have been more disappointed with the reception and service. The booking was for 1.00pm on the 9th April. We arrived twenty minutes before as requested only to be told that our booking was for 1.50pm!!! So we advised our taxi who had taken us over from Seminack Beach Resort & Spa one hour and fifteen minutes away that our booking had been changed. He agreed to wait. At 1.30pm two ladies arrived for their 1.50pm flight. We were quickly shown a safety video and advised of our seats in the helicopter. The seating is compact and two of us were slightly larger and two average. One of the ladies was seated beside the pilot, I was behind her, the next lady was placed in the centre seat and my husband behind the pilot. We took off, no life jackets or instructions as to where they were! The front passenger and my self had all the views, but I’m sorry to say the poor lady in the middle could see nothing and my husband only saw the ocean for the duration of the flight. TWELVE MINUTES FROM LIFT OFF TO TOUCH DOWN for a booking of TWENTY MINUTES. The biggest con job / rip off I have ever experienced in all of my sixty-eight years.
