Château de Chambord: France’s Most Spectacular Renaissance Castle

Arrive at magnificent Château de Chambord, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most recognisable landmarks in France. Located in the Sologne region, this immense royal estate was commissioned by King François I in the early 16th century as an ambitious hunting lodge and symbol of Renaissance power.

Inspired by Italian Renaissance architecture, Chambord was designed to impress visiting dignitaries with its monumental scale, ornate façades and extraordinary roofline. The château includes more than 440 rooms, 282 fireplaces and 84 staircases, making it one of the largest and most remarkable castles in the Loire Valley.

The Famous Double-Helix Staircase

At the heart of Chambord stands its iconic double-helix staircase, widely associated with the influence of Leonardo da Vinci. Two spiralling staircases rise through the château without crossing, allowing visitors to ascend and descend independently while catching glimpses of one another through the open central core.

Climb towards the upper levels and admire the remarkable stonework, sculpted details and impressive lantern tower that crowns the château. This ingenious feature remains one of the most photographed and admired examples of Renaissance design in France.

Guided Visit of Chambord Castle

Follow your private guide on an engaging 1.5-hour guided tour of Château de Chambord. Explore the principal rooms, learn about royal life and hear how François I, later kings and the French State shaped the château’s long history.

Your guide will bring the monument to life through stories of hunting, courtly ambition, architectural innovation and the challenges of preserving such a vast estate. Discover why Chambord remains a defining symbol of the French Renaissance and a must-see highlight of any Loire Valley stay.

Panoramic Terraces and Free Time

Reach the château’s spectacular panoramic terraces, where the elaborate rooftop unfolds like a skyline of towers, chimneys, domes and sculpted stonework. Enjoy sweeping views over the surrounding parkland and the forested estate that once served as a royal hunting ground.

Helene was a great tour guide , super interesting and engaged, happy to answer any questions and really fun (5 stars for her!) Would have enjoyed more time in St Emilion but apart from that we had a great time.

My husband and I felt privileged and thankful to be on Thierry’s afternoon wine tasting tour in Alsace ~ privileged because of the enthusiasm, authenticity, knowledge, personality, hospitality, thoughtfulness, professionalism, and fascination of being chauffeured and guided by Sommelier Thierry ~ nonstop engagement, education, and introduction to the regional history of Alsace, a crash course from its native gentleman ~ and thankful because of the sweet couple from Mexico who shared the tour, access to two exceptional AB Grand Cru vintners/wines, and the fantastic overview of this unique region. I recommend that you book this tour at the beginning of your stay, because you will appreciate Alsace and get more from your visit if you are equipped with all the generous insight from Thierry. He escorted us in a comfortable Mercedes and even dropped us off at our hotel. Perhaps it seems expensive at first, but afterwards you think what a bargain! There are tour guides and then there is Thierry ~ he doesn’t read reviews, but you do, because you want to make the most of your time, money, and energy so I hope this helps. Allez, on y va!
