Dream of the last Anglo-Saxon king and a flagship of the Church of England, Westminster Abbey is a tour de force of 1000 years of both English and British history. This spectacular Medieval gothic ‘royal peculiar’ has hosted every coronation from William the Conqueror to Elizabeth II and seventeen royal weddings, most recently that of William and Kate. It is also the burial place of many royals and notables including feuding Tudor siblings Elizabeth and Mary, writers such as Geoffrey Chaucer, Rudyard Kipling and Charles Dickens, scientists Isaac Newton, Stephen Hawking and Charles Darwin, abolitionists, actors and the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Marvel at the 700 year old coronation chair as you learn more of this most sacred and complex ceremony, admire the craft of 16th century stonework, the portraits of modern martyrs and the grand Henry VII Lady Chapel.

Our guide, Turid, took us on the most wonderful tour of Westminster Abbey, enhancing our previous visits with new stories, tidbits, and things to see. By the time we were finished, we had become old friends. She was energetic, funny, told us history with a twinkle in her eye and a smile on her face - clearly the old kings and queens of England were her monarchs! Highly recommended!
