Full description

Explore the magic of Rome as a first-time visitor, on an expert guided city stroll that blends legendary landmarks with off-the-beaten-path discoveries. Start your Roman adventure in one of the city's most beautiful squares—Piazza Navona—where history and street artists bring the Eternal City to life. Step inside the Pantheon, sample authentic Italian gelato, then admire the breathtaking frescoes at Sant'Ignazio Church. Explore the underground ruins of the Trevi Fountain before tossing a coin into its waters for good luck. End your journey at the iconic Spanish Steps, the perfect spot to soak in the beauty of Rome as evening falls.

Piazza Navona & the Pantheon: Bernini and 2,000 years of engineering

Begin in Piazza Navona, one of Rome's most striking squares, where your guide points out Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers at its center. From there, step inside the Pantheon, a temple turned church that's stood almost 2,000 years and now holds the tombs of Italian kings and the painter Raphael. Your guide explains how the Romans engineered its massive dome and open oculus, technology nobody's fully replicated since.

Gelato & Sant'Ignazio: a sweet stop and a ceiling that lies to you

Pause for gelato at a handpicked local spot, where your guide explains what separates real artisan gelato from the tourist-trap version. Then step into Sant'Ignazio Church, where a painted ceiling uses forced perspective to fake a dome that isn't actually there. Look for the marked spot on the floor, usually a mirror, that lines up the illusion perfectly, one of the more convincing tricks in a city full of them.

Vicus Caprarius: Rome's ancient plumbing, underground

Descend into Vicus Caprarius, an archaeological site hidden beneath the streets near the Trevi Fountain, where the layers of Roman construction are stacked in front of you. Your guide explains how the Aqua Virgo, an ancient Roman aqueduct still in use today, once supplied this neighborhood and still feeds the Trevi Fountain above. Climb back into daylight and you're standing right on top of the same water system, now flowing into one of the world's most famous fountains.

The Trevi Fountain & Spanish Steps: a coin toss and a final view

At the Trevi Fountain, your guide shares the tradition behind the coin toss: over your left shoulder, said to guarantee your return to Rome, with time to actually do it rather than fight through a crowd. The tour finishes at the Spanish Steps, past Bernini's Barcaccia Fountain at its base, a historic gathering place for artists and poets for centuries. Before you go, your guide shares a few personal recommendations for the rest of your stay.
