Totumo Mud Volcano Half-Day Tour

The volcano mud experience itself was definitely unique and something different, but unfortunately, I would not do it again. The biggest issue was the unexpected tipping. We were advised that we should tip for pictures and other services, but it was never made clear that it would be $10 for pictures, $10 to hold your shoes, and another $10 to get washed off. These additional costs should really be communicated upfront or included in the excursion price so guests can budget accordingly. It could have been a really enjoyable experience, but the constant requests for money took away from it. At one point, I had to step in and make it clear that I would not be paying more than the agreed-upon $10 total. I also felt the tour guide could have done more to assist with the situation and help calm things down. The experience itself was unique, but the pressure around tipping and the lack of communication unfortunately overshadowed what could have been a great excursion.

Isabel did an amazing job coordinating everything and keeping us informed throughout the trip. We had Jesus as our driver and Jose as our tour guide, and both were wonderful! We spent the day after vocal Jose was with us for lunch We enjoying self explore the beach and we had such a great time! To start off, the night before our booked excursion, the tour operator messaged me on WhatsApp to say the Half Day Volcano Tour was unavailable but they could offer us the full day which included the Volcano as well as a stop at their beach club with lunch at no extra cost. This seemed off to us because the Half Day was still available on Trip Advisor and they messaged the night before being picked up at 8:15am, after we had already paid for the tour. We gave them the benefit of the doubt and accepted the change in our tour. First, we went to the Volcano. It was about an hour drive, so I would suggest bringing a book or your headphones. For the Volcano itself - I hate to state the obvious, but it looks man made and is quite literally a volcano of mud. The stairs going up and down are also man made and slippery. For a short girl, it felt like being on the StairMaster at level 5, but my taller partner didn’t feel a thing. The mud itself was nice and the guide told us it holds vitamins like potassium. The guide also told us before we got there that there were four OPTIONAL services including someone to take pictures with your phone, guys giving massages, someone to hold your personal items, then the ladies in the lake who will wash you off. In my opinion, paying someone to take pictures was absolutely worth it. If you’re looking for some luxury, I heard the guys who give the massages did very well. The ladies in the lake also were very thorough. The only issue I had was that these services though offered, were pretty forced. The guys in the mud will immediately touch you and start massaging you with the advantage that you don’t understand how dense the mud is. The ladies in the lake even after we said no multiple times used guilt to get their way. With that being said, you can give in and respect the game because this is the way they made their living. It is about 12 USD extra, or 40.00 COP, for all four. If not, hold strong on your declines. We then headed to the beach club which actually was nice. The lunch was yummy, the workers were respectful and you had access to the beach and pool. The only problem was that they were actively doing construction. Overall, I think the price was worth it including the beach club so I am glad we accepted the change. I would not do the Volcano Tour again, though, I do not think that was worth the money.

Anna was such a great tour guide! She was very friendly, fun, and welcoming to our group. She accommodated all of our needs/requests promptly. I would 100% do this again as long as Anna is the guide!
