Full description

You'll start where old Barcelona still lives: a hidden bookshop bar, an 80-year-old bodega, and a tapas counter that hasn't changed its menu since 1945. Then you'll cross the waterfront to Time Out Market Barcelona, where every kitchen has been handpicked by Time Out's own local editors. Along the way, you'll taste cava, vermouth, and house wine poured straight from the barrel, then sit down for a drink, seafood or vegetarian paella, and churros with chocolate overlooking the port.

Your first stop looks like an ordinary Gothic Quarter bookshop, because it is one, until you spot La Rebotiga, the small bar tucked among the shelves. The bookshop itself has anchored this block for more than 40 years, saved once by neighbors who refused to let it close. Meet your guide over a glass of cava, secallona del pastor, and brioche topped with smoked sardine, your first clue that this neighborhood hides its best moments in plain sight.

Next, settle in at Bodega La Palma, a wine cellar that's occupied the same corner since 1935, when it opened as a grocery store before evolving into a gathering place for artists, poets, and neighborhood regulars. Taste patatas bravas and Manchego cheese with a glass of vermouth as your guide walks you through la hora del vermut, the pre-meal ritual that still shapes an evening out in Catalonia. It's less a drink than a pause built into the day, and you'll understand why it's stuck around for a century.

At La Plata, the menu hasn't changed since 1945, and it doesn't need to. Try Catalan botifarra sausage and crisp fried fish with house wine poured straight from the barrel, and watch your guide demonstrate the porrón, a long-spouted pitcher built for drinking without touching your lips to the rim. Trying it yourself is optional. Watching someone else attempt it usually isn't.

The evening ends across the waterfront at Time Out Market Barcelona, where the same local editorial team behind your first three stops has handpicked every kitchen in the hall. Along the way, you'll pass views of the port, the Columbus Monument, and Montjuïc as the Gothic Quarter's narrow streets give way to open water.

Sit down to enjoy a classic seafood paella or flavorful vegetarian paella, made by Can Ros, a family-run Barcelona institution for more than a century. Then indulge in artisan-made churros, served with indulgent hot chocolate for dipping, from Carmen Atelier de Churros, a traditional churrería. All this as you enjoy a drink and take in the panoramic views of Barcelona's port just beyond the market's windows. There's no reason to rush the last bite, and no one's asking you to.

Lara was a wonderful local tour guide!! The whole trip was as seamless, fun, and we felt prepared with parking logistics. Highly recommend the morning tour, as there was very little traffic and we had fewer tourists to navigate around. Also be prepared to be soaked on the boat tour! The priority tickets get you to the front of the boat and the waterfall spray hits you directly in the face. So fun!!
