Itinerary
Right in the heart of South Africa’s largest, and the world’s most famous, township (so big, it’s practically a city in its own right) Vilakazi Street is where Nelson Mandela spent the first couple of nights upon his release after 27 years of imprisonment, with his former wife, Winnie Mandela. Number 8115 Orlando West was also where he lived between 1946 and 1962.
Pass by: Soccer City goes by various other names, the best known of which are the FNB Stadium and The Calabash (after its iconic shape). This stadium, situated in Nasrec, near Johannesburg’s Soweto Township, hosted the opening and final matches of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. As the main stadium for the World Cup, it needed to undergo major renovations to be ready for the tens of thousands of football fans, as well as the players from around the world.
Pass by: The Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital is the 3rd largest hospital in the world, occupying around 173 acres (0.70 km2), with approximately 3'200 beds and about 6'760 staff members.
The cooling towers feature the images of Soweto, from the black Madonna of Regina Mundi to Nelson Mandela. You could just visit the Soweto Towers to see the art! Constructed in the 1950s, the cooling towers were once part of the Orlando Power Station which, for the Brits, looks a lot like the Tate Modern. Now, the towers offer bungee jumping in Soweto(, as well as power and internal swings, abseiling, rap and base jumping, paintballing and rock climbing… there is something for every adventure junkie.
The evening starts with a visit to the first of four different nightspots. Soak up the atmosphere of the city’s vibrant night life and enjoy local drinks and traditional cuisine. The first drink at each bar is on us. The four places you visit are a combination of traditional street bars known as shebeens in Orlando West and modern bars in the famous Vilakazi Street. When the fun is over, your guide drives you back to your accommodation in Johannesburg.

Great tour in a different light
We choose the night tour to see Soweto in a different light. We saw the key sights, but also experienced the current culture. Our guide Marc gave us a great flavor for Soweto as it was and is. Then he took us to several bars were we met locals who were out for a fun Saturday night. We definitely recommend Marc and this tour for a real Soweto experience.
Incredible experience in Soweto
We had the most fantastic time with Thalepo and local Soweto girl Hope. I won’t spoil the tour but if you are thinking about it - do it! MoAfrika are so professional it was a once in a lifetime experience and we never felt unsafe.
