Itinerary
After pick-ups, we convene at FNB Soccer Stadium on the outskirts of Soweto. Meet your guide and listen to a short explanation of the famous soccer stadium and the role it played in Soweto’s history.
We set off to the heart of Soweto, driving past Baragwanath Hospital, an enormous taxi rank and the historic suburb of Diepkloof
Our first stop in Soweto is at Motsoaledi informal settlement. Walk through the streets with your guide past street cafés and craft markets to a community centre that MoAfrika sponsors. Greet and meet the people in the settlement and learn more about their way of life.
We continue on through Orlando West to the hub of Soweto. We stop outside Regina Mundi Church and Freedom Square for a quick overview
The Hector Pieterson Museum is a large museum located in Orlando West, Soweto, South Africa, two blocks away from where Hector Pieterson was shot and killed 16 June 1976.
We make our way down the vibrant Vilakazi Street, past iconic monuments and the homes of Nelson and Winnie Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Time permitting, you have the option of stopping at Nelson Mandela Museum for a visit (own cost)
The morning ends at a popular restaurant at the base of the massive Soweto Towers. Enjoy a traditional meal of ‘shisa nyama’ and visit the craft market. If you’re keen, you can bungee jump off the top of the towers (own cost and time permitting).
We visit the world famous Apartheid museum where you will learn about the history of South Africa and the struggle of its people during the apartheid era

Traveler reviews
The best tour guide ever!
Lobo was an extraordinary tour guide and driver. Lebo was a "walking encyclopedia" of South African history! We were able to talk with him freely, he encouraged us to ask questions, and we could tell he was a man of integrity and took his responsibilities seriously. Lebo had a kind personality and was quick with a good laugh. We know that we were very fortunate to have Lebo as our guide and driver.
Soweto Tour
We had an excellent time with our tour guide, Nicholas visiting the sites and sounds in and around Soweto. Very informative tour. Nicholas, our tour guide made the experience complete.
Incredible tour and guide (Lebo)
Amazing tour! I traveled with my mom and did the "Soweto, Apartheid and Lunch" history tour. Our guide, Lebo, was absolutely fantastic: kind, warm, patient, and incredibly knowledgeable. He explained everything with so much detail, clarity, and passion, and helped us understand not only the history of the places we visited, but also about the deeper historical and cultural context behind them. We learned a lot throughout the tour. Lebo went far beyond simply doing his job. He genuinely cared about making the experience meaningful and unforgettable. We are very grateful for his time, generosity, and the way he brought the history to life. Highly recommended!
