Itinerary
Sé Cathedral in São Paulo is a magnificent architectural marvel inspired by medieval European churches. Located at Sé Square, it stands as the city's focal point. With its impressive exterior featuring two towering spires and a grand dome, the cathedral's interior is equally captivating. Inside, visitors will find a vast space adorned with stained glass, mosaics, and sacred artworks. The cathedral also boasts South America's largest organ with five keyboards and 12,000 tubes. The crypt houses the resting place of bishops, archbishops, and notable figures from São Paulo's history. A visit to Sé Cathedral offers a mesmerizing blend of history, culture, and architectural grandeur.
Explore São Paulo's rich history at its founding site, home to the Church of São José de Anchieta and the City Museum. These landmarks, established by the Jesuits four centuries ago, mark the origin of what is now the Southern Hemisphere's largest city. The church, renamed in 2014 following the canonization of its patron José de Anchieta by Pope Francis, stands as a monument to the city's vibrant cultural and religious past.
The São Bento Monastery, a historic and spiritual site in São Paulo, offers visitors an immersive experience with its Gregorian chant-filled masses and a shop that sells artisanal baked goods and preserves. These products, made by monks following centuries-old recipes, are high-quality, made with fresh, refined ingredients. The monastery's exquisite and tasteful packaging makes for an ideal souvenir from São Paulo. Despite its religious roots, the site appeals to a broad audience, marking it as a must-visit destination in the city.
Patriarca Square in São Paulo is home to the historic Santo Antonio Church, a city heritage site known for its priceless colonial-era art. Notable features include an ornately carved baroque altar from 1780 and the city's oldest murals, dating from the early 17th century, discovered during the church's 2005 restoration. The facade, remodeled several times, now showcases an eclectic style from 1919, offering a rich testament to São Paulo's layered historical and artistic legacy.
The San Francisco Convent and Sanctuary, founded in 1647, has been integral to São Paulo for over three centuries since its days as a small village. Built using rammed earth, the church bears witness to the resourcefulness of early Franciscan settlers. The convent was home to Frei Galvão, Brazil's first saint, and Cardinal Dom Paulo Evaristo Arns, who transformed it into a sanctuary in the 1990s. A unique feature of the site is its basement bakery that bakes and sells bread daily, offering visitors a taste of the convent's rich history.
The Museum of Sacred Art of São Paulo is a leading institution in Brazil, dedicated to studying, preserving, and exhibiting sacred art. It holds one of the country's most significant collections of religious artifacts, amassed throughout the 20th century from various ancient churches. The collection spans various mediums and periods, with pieces like images of saints, silverware, and paintings from Brazil and Europe, dating between the 16th and 20th centuries. A visit to this museum offers a deep dive into the rich cultural and spiritual history of Brazil.
Experience the grandeur of one of São Paulo's most splendid churches, founded in 1940. Renowned as one of the most popular venues for weddings in the city, it regularly graces the social columns of local newspapers. The design of the church draws inspiration from Brazilian and Portuguese baroque temples, reflected in its neo-colonial style. This architectural trend was widely embraced in São Paulo during the 1920s and 1930s, and continues to captivate visitors with its blend of traditional charm and elegance. Visit this magnificent church to appreciate a remarkable piece of São Paulo's architectural heritage.

Expectations vs reality….
Our experience overall was great! Our guide, Bruno, was knowledgeable, kind, enthusiastic, and helpful. When we realized that some of the places we thought we were going to see were closed, he was able to take us to other places that were interesting to explore to make up for that. He also arranged for us to have a tour of the cathedral, which we weren’t expecting, so that was a pleasant surprise. The tour included seeing the bell tower and walking on the roof of the cathedral. That was an amazing experience! There was some unexpected walking on the tour (across the city center) which we were not prepared for, but it did give us a feel of what old São Paulo was like & we got to see some beautiful buildings. The museum of sacred art, and some of the churches were closed. We were also told that the monastery doesn’t allow visitors except by appointment, even though it was listed as a stop on the itinerary. We were a little disappointed about that especially since the tour company should know that those places were closed or inaccessible and not offer the tour on a day where they are closed (or at least let the customer know). But, we made the most of it and still had an incredible experience. Overall the experience was great and we would recommend it!
Amazing!
Great tour of São Paulo with a focus on the churches. I’m a young woman who was traveling alone for the day, and I felt super safe with Carlos and with the tour company as a whole. They were so responsive and helpful. Would definitely recommend, especially for anyone worried about safety while travelling in Brazil.
Fantastic experience on the São Paulo city tour
I had a fantastic experience on the São Paulo city tour with Bruno, guiding our group of 15 through cathedrals, the Asian district, Afro Brazilian museum,, modern Art museum, and more. Bruno's extensive knowledge enriched the journey, providing insightful context to Brazil's development. he was open to question and responded sufficiently with good information. The only drawback was an unexpected substantial walk to one museum, catching us off guard. While slightly inconvenient, the overall tour was exceptional, earning a solid 4.5 /5 stars. Bruno's expertise and the diverse sites explored made it an insightful and enjoyable exploration of São Paulo's rich cultural and historical tapestry. Highly recommend, just be prepared for a bit of walking.
Enjoying São Paulo!
