Traveler reviews
Desert magic
Excellent experience, enhanced by the friendliness and helpfulness of the guide/driver (Abdelaali). Always very helpful and available to assist.
Big disappointment
The tour is sold as “luxury”, but does not fulfill the advertised. We traveled on a bus of about 50 people, not by minibus, which caused constant delays. The guide gave no explanations, offered confusing information and disappeared without giving answers. In the desert, the sunset camel ride lasted about 15 minutes, when we were told it would be about an hour. Activities advertised as camel at dawn, sandboarding and stargazing were not performed or we were asked to pay separately. The supposed gourmet dinner was of very low quality. The store had no heating and the mattress was very uncomfortable. The hotel on the first night was half built and unheated. Poor organization, services not provided and experience far below promise. Not recommended.
Adventure trip to the desert
We had a very nice trip to the desert Erg Chebbi from Marrakech to Fez. The organization before the trip and during it was top. You also get the services that are in the description. We had the luxury camp where not only the accommodation guarantees a better experience. The camel rides to sunset and dawn are much longer because the camp is much deeper in the desert. In addition, the luggage can be taken completely. Negative points: In Ait Ben Haddou there are stops for buying pictures or scarves (turbans). A scarf is supposedly needed for the desert and camel ride. This is definitely just money making. Since the rides take place in the evening/morning, sunscreen and a hat are sufficient, if at all. On the second day there is a stop to buy carpets. Except for a gorge, there are no other stops that day to look at something beautiful. In the evening we go with the camels into the desert. The first accommodation you reach halfway to Merzouga is very very simple. No linen, smelly bath, shower that puts the bath under water, hygiene that takes getting used to. If you are willing to leave your comfort zone for a few days, you will experience a trip that he/she will remember for a long time and that is what it is all about.
Desert experience in merzouga with luxury tent and one night in hotel
Tour departing from Marrakech and returning to Fes with a night in the Dades Gorges and 2 nights in Merzouga, one night in a luxury tent and one night in a hotel. I recommend the 4 days instead of the classic 3 because it allows you to relax in Merzouga by the pool before leaving for Marrakech or Fes. Thanks to our driver Abdelaali very professional and attentive driving and showed us the places they crossed.
The dunes are worth the drive
Good price for transport, 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 3 nights of accommodation, a number of scenic stops, and a camel ride. You don’t have one tour guide for the whole trip, you have one driver, and you will have local tour guides where your driver drops you off. My driver was Kiki and he was great - I sat up front with him and it was great talking to him and learning more about Morocco from a local. He was a competent, safe, and professional driver and I would be happy to do another tour with him. We stayed in touch after the tour and he has been very helpful with providing me additional recommendations and answering my questions about driving in Morocco (I rented a car). If you are debating b/w 3 and 4 day trip, definitely do the 4 day trip. It would have killed me to leave the dunes after being there for only 16 hours (which is how long you get on the 3-day trip). Activities on the 3rd day will be at your cost but it’s worth it - I highly recommend a (PRIVATE!) quad tour of the dunes (you’ll get to go faster if you do a private tour).
