Itinerary
National Park Hike With our bilingual naturalist guide, you'll walk 3.5-km (2 miles) in Las Pailas circular path through the tropical forest to enjoy the best views of the volcano, incredible nature, volcanic activity, and wildlife. The park is home to more than 300 species of birds, and many other animals, such as armadillos, bays, iguanas, coatis and white-faced monkeys, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, toucans, turkeys, and much more. You will stop to view the volcanic activity including bubbling mud pots, fumaroles, and a mini crater. The Las Pailas sector spectacularly shows the power of the Rincon de la Vieja volcano, the most active and largest volcano in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Steam and sulfur come from natural fumaroles of the yellow and rusty soil. Witness clay pails in various shades of brown with boiling volcanic water, fine gray volcanic mud bubbles and explosions in large pails. This volcano is like no other in Costa Rica.
After the hike, take a short walk off the beaten path to Oropendola Waterfall just outside of the park, where you can jump in and swim in the blue lagoon.
Hot Springs & Volcanic Mud Bath After lunch you will driven to the Hot Springs. Surrounded by tropical dry forest, the Río Negro (Black River) Hot Springs feature ten pools with thermal waters heated naturally by the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano. The soothing mineral waters are crystal clear and all natural. Relax and enjoy luxuriating in our healing waters. You can also try our volcanic mud “bath”, where you smooth volcanic clay mud on your body!

Traveler reviews
Full day of memories!
We had a really good time. The excursion exceeded our expectations. The things we were concerned about like the heat and the bugs were not an issue. The hike was the first things we did so it was the coolest part of the day, done mostly in a heavily shaded forest, and was at a pace that allowed frequency rests to find and look for animals. We had bug spray on but never reapplied it the whole day. There was ample time and changing rooms between each part of the excursion for changing clothes and shoes. We felt very safe leaving our belongings on the bus and not carrying them. The waterfall was spectacular. The water was very cold and refreshing after the hike! The hot springs were “hot tub hot”. There were several to enjoy before using the mud! It left our skin so smooth after showering it off and going into the creek adjacent to the springs. The bus stopped in the morning to get authentic Costa Rican food for breakfast if you wanted to buy it and again for lunch after the hot springs. The buffet lunch was included and had a large selection of food choices-Really good food in an outdoor Costa Rican restaurant. At the very end of the excursion there was a stop for souvenirs of all kinds- coffee, liquor, clothes, etc. It was a 12 hour, full day of memory making!
Not worth the money or time.
Guide was terrible. Practically ran the whole tour. Shared minimal info on plants and animals. Shining moment was 2 howler monkeys in a tree and a tapir.
Excellent experience
Excellent experience. The hike to the volcano followed by the waterfall and the hot springs was great.
Wrong advertisement.
Felipe the guide it was wonderful and very patient. My sister had a little difficult doing the hiking, and he always was very attentive . I would said in the ad that this hiking it's very difficult for many people. Also, the ad said a price and when I did booked as a pick up on our hotel, they begin to send emails that we meet at the Rincon de la vieja, so we called them and they said that for them to pick us we need to pay an extra $40.00 . NOT COOL.
