Well Worth the Time

We enjoyed this tour very much. As a classical music nerd, I wanted to see the Vyšehrad Castle described in Smetana's Má Vlast (a piece banned for two years by the Nazis during WW2), and to see the graves of Dvořák and Smetana, both of whom are buried in the national cultural cemetery on the grounds. We were treated, in addition, to fine views of Prague, a beautifully decorated neo-gothic church with an amazing interior painted in the art nouveau style, a tour of 14th century Czech history, some Czech folklore, and fortress that evolved over centuries. It was a Monday, and the grounds were not at all crowded. Our tour was unhurried, and our guide, Anna, was charming and informative, conveying lots of interesting history regarding the castle, as well as Czech history in general. We also toured the casemates of the fortress with Tomasz as our guide. We explored the tunnels within the walls of the fortress, and saw six of the original statues from the Charles Bridge, stored there to prevent further erosion (the statues you see on the bridge are copies). Tomasz was well prepared, had a fine sense of humor, and patiently answered all of our questions. Anna picked us up at our hotel, and we took the tram to the castle. We took the tram back to Charles Square near our hotel, which proved very easy (and free for those of us over 65!). All told, it was an excellent way to spend an afternoon. Highly recommended. Thank you Anna and Tomasz!
