Snorkelling + Mayan Underworld cenote tour

Our family of 5 (husband + older teens) did a half day snorkel and Mayan Underworld tour with Iber (guide) and Axle (driver). It was fantastic. We started with snorkelling in Tankah Bay with a small boat that took us to the reef, beyond the significant sargassum on the beach and in the shallows. The reef is shallow and still has beautiful topography (still lots of fan corals) but it’s sad to see the bleaching and patchy colouration on the corals. Iber pointed out barracuda, we saw squid, cuttlefish, numerous reef fish, and a sleeping sand tiger shark. A nice hour or so in the ocean! Axle then drove us to Cenote Santa Cruz for the Mayan Underworld part. After parking, Axel lead us through a jungle path to the cenote entrance with a canister of burning copal to deter the numerous mosquitoes (and he even hung our towels up to dry while we were in the Underworld. Thank you Axle!) Iber lead us through the cave system, imparting science and lore in a truly magical experience. Walking, swimming, crawling, ducking through low passages filled with stalagtites and stalagmites, we eventually made it to the cenote (with a rendering!) which was open to the sky and filled with crystal clear water. We exited via a different path. There was no one else in the cave system or cenote. We finished the tour with a lunch of delicious Mayan style tacos at Abuelo Miguel Taqueria in Akumal. The limanado with chaya was super refreshing. I can’t say enough about the small group which was just us but could’ve been up to only 8 people, and the care and information that Iber provided. We learned and experienced so much!
