Full description
Step into the restricted rooms of ancient Rome most visitors never get to see. With an expert guide devoted entirely to your group, you'll explore immaculately preserved ancient villas and temples rarely seen by the public, uncover centuries of history at the Colosseum and Roman Forum in true VIP style. This tour includes a visit up onto Palatine Hill, into one of the Super Sites, imperial spaces like the House of Augustus, where frescoes have held their color for nearly 2,000 years, the Santa Maria Antiqua, or the Domus Tiberiana, the empire's first imperial palace. This is Rome's greatest empire experienced the way it should be.
Your guide leads your group through the Roman Forum's temples, senate buildings, and public squares, the same ground where the Republic gave way to the Empire over a thousand years. With only members of your own group to work around, you can stop wherever your questions actually are.
On Palatine Hill, you'll step into one of several restricted areas closed to standard ticket holders, chosen based on what's open that day, such as the House of Augustus, the former residence of Caesar Augustus, the Santa Maria Antiqua, or the Domus Tiberiana, the empire's first imperial palace. Each option is a preserved interior space with its own centuries-old story, frescoes and architecture that survive from the earliest days of the Roman Empire. It's the kind of place a general admission ticket doesn't reach, and your guide can spend as long there as your group actually wants.
From there, you'll enter the Colosseum itself, walking the first and second tiers where Roman citizens once watched the games, from animal hunts to gladiator combat. Your guide explains how more than 50,000 people could fill these seats and clear them again through dozens of arched exits built directly into the structure, engineering that still holds up nearly two thousand years later, all without another group's schedule to work around.

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of your tour, your guide will be holding a yellow WalksDevour sign. This tour meets at Via delle Terme di Tito, 72 (Oppio Caffè). Meet directly across the street from Oppio Caffè at the gated entrance to Colle Oppio Park. Meet your guide at the entrance of Colle Oppio Park on the corner of Via di Terme di Tito and Via Nicola Salvi.

Know before you book
- Unfortunately due to the nature of this tour it is not suitable for guests with mobility impairments or with wheelchairs, or strollers.
- This is a walking tour. Guests should be able to walk at a moderate pace without difficulty.
- The full names of all participants must be provided at the time of booking and match the names on their ID. The Colosseum requires all guests (including children) to present government ID at the time of entry. Therefore any guest that does not submit their name in advance of the tour, or who does not bring their ID to the meeting point, will be refused participation without refund. Name corrections are possible up to 7 days before the visit. After this, changes may not be possible.
- The Colosseum, Forum, Palatine Hill, and House of Augustus may close occasionally. We'll notify you of any changes in advance if possible. For last-minute closures, updates will be given at the start of the tour.
- Walks is an Official Parco Archeologico del Colosse Operator approved to lead guided tours of the Colosseum, Roman Forum & Palatine Hill.
Know before you go
- Please arrive 15 minutes before your tour start time for check-in. Out of courtesy to other guests, we’re unable to wait for latecomers. No refunds can be provided for late arrivals or no-shows.

- All guests must pass through security. No weapons or large items will be permitted.
- Only small backpacks and regular-size handbags are allowed inside, guests with larger bags will be denied entrance. No storage room/lockers available.
- The Colosseum, Forum, Palatine Hill, and House of Augustus may close occasionally. We'll notify you of any changes in advance if possible. For last-minute closures, updates will be given at the start of the tour.
- Tips/gratuities (for your guide) are always appreciated.
