Spectacular Story
This was and still is a true treasure to see. The story of disaster to rebuild and the beauty that still lies within. To know this Opera House is still active and providing entertainment was inspirational. The smell of years of life love and happiness is very much alive. I highly recommend this tour. You can see and feel just how alive the opera house becomes through the eyes of our tour guide. Its a true must see.
Disappointing
We have taken many tours with Viator and this is by far one of the most disappointing ones. First off, when we went to the meeting point no one was there to greet us in a way that everyone understood who the tour guide was. There were multiple tours there not just Viator. GetYourGuide also had people taking the tour as well, so it was confusing. Then when we finally figured out who to go to, the man who was there gave us headphones that barely fit into our ears. They were terrible. The gentleman who was actually leading the tour was very nice. I’m sure he is extremely knowledgeable, but it was like going on a junior high school field trip with your history teacher who talked too much about tedious facts. We thought we were taking a tour to see the La Scala theater and learn about that. We went into a box in the theater for literally five minutes. The rest of the tour was in a very small museum that we never would have visited to begin with. From what I’ve read online for A LOT LESS money we could’ve just gotten a ticket and gone and seen the theater for five minutes and the very uninteresting museum. There were multiple tour groups inside the small museum speaking at once so you couldn’t understand the guide. It was hot and everyone smelled. So my husband and I just ended up leaving the tour early. We asked one of the La Scala entrance men if he would take our headphones and give it to our guide, and he laughed and said, “yeah sure it happens a lot.” So that tells you everything you need to know about this tour. It would’ve been nice to see more of the theater and learn about that directly. I don’t need a big opera history or to know that wealthy people get to go to the opera because it costs a lot of money, obviously we know this. All in all, this was an OVERPRICED tour that was very disappointing.
So lacking
The tour guide knows his history, but failed as a guide for the following reasons: -presentation was lack luster, with no eye contact -incessantly coughed into his microphone -did not take into account the large number of people in the group when pointing to things to see. Those in the back of the group never got to see what he was referring to. -spent little time focused on 20th and 21st centuries opera singers (e.g., Luciano Pavarotti., Maria Callas, etc.).
