The square is subject to frequent gatherings which can be volatile, and really should be avoided by foreigners during those times. In calmer moments the square shows the wear and tear of revolution but is pretty central to modern Egyptian political life. Just west of the roundabout is a street called El-Tahrir Street. It is covered in murals depicting the revolutionary feelings. Great artwork. Warm people. Depending on the political climate, worth taking a look.

Is a major north-to-south street in the walled city of historic Cairo, Egypt. It is one of Cairo's oldest streets as it dates back to the foundation of the city (not counting the earlier Fustat) by the Fatimid dynasty in the 10th century, under their fourth caliph, Al-Mu'izz li-Din Allah (after whom the street is named).[1] Historically, it was the most important artery of the city and was often referred to as the Qasaba (or Qasabah). It constituted the main axis of the city's economic zones where its souqs (markets) were concentrated. The street's prestige also attracted the construction of many monumental religious and charitable buildings commissioned by Egypt's rulers and elites, making it a dense repository of historic Islamic architecture in Cairo. This is especially evident in the Bayn al-Qasrayn area, which is lined with some of the most important monuments of Islamic Cairo.

Walking down El Moez Street there are so many beautiful buildings to be admired, among them being the famous Al Aqmar mosque. One of the oldest mosques in Egypt, its façade is known for its detailed stonework, while its interior welcomes all visitors with a fresh, cooling breeze. A haven for architectural enthusiasts, Al Qamar mosque is said to have been built during the Fatimid period in 1125 AD under the regime of Al-Ma’mun Al Bata’ihi, though some historians argue it was built during the caliphate of Imam Al-Amir bi-Ahkami l-Lah; others still claim that it was built during the caliphate of Al Mustansir.

The mosque is located at the beginning of al-Muizz li Din Allah Street, adjacent to the Fatimid northern wall of the Old City of Cairo in Egypt, only a few steps away from Bab al-Futuh (Gate of Conquest) and Bab al-Nasr (Gate of Victory). At the time of its construction, the mosque lay outside the brick-built walls encircling Fatimid Cairo, constructed by order of Jawhar al-Saqalli, the commander of the armies of the Fatimid caliph, al-Muizz li-Din Allah in AH 359 / AD 970. In AH 480 / AD 1087. Badr al-Din al-Jamali, minister of the Fatimid caliph al-Mustansir, undertook the expansion of the city on the northern and southern ends, for a distance of 150 m. He built the new walls out of stone and the north wall butted on to the northeastern wall of the mosque, Cairo, Egypt

Very informative visit and I particularly recommend the Francophone guide MICKAEL . We visited Cairo twice, each time with him, and his help was invaluable, his explanations clear and rich in detail. A perfect guide.

Truly a guide steeped in culture and knowledge of current Egyptian life.

With SARAH, Francophone guide, AU Cairo, visit Museums and Souk, the guide with a captivating knowledge of Egyptian history. For the Souk interesting global tour, little more the guide knows small shops where quality objects are sold, made in EGYPT.

Amazing 8-Day Egypt Trip! Super recommended!

Memphis Tours solved everything from start to finish in our 8 days! Perfect coordination and flexibility of everything we visited: pyramids, temples, meals, Nile cruise, local flights, anyway, we were not alone at any time. The guides Mohamed and Medhat are champions, they know a lot and explained every detail and query (all in Spanish). Thank you! We traveled the country from north (Cairo) to south (Abu Simbel) accompanied by tourism professionals, all quiet and at no time felt unsafe. Egypt is a great country and worth coming to. I assure you that with Memphis the experience will be unforgettable and you should not worry about anything. The service on the cruise ship Salacia with all its crew was outstanding. We had a great time! Thanks also to the country officials (Ibrahim and Yahya) and the drivers. Geniuses! Very grateful.
