Underneath the glacier waits the mighty volcano Katla where the both the glacier and the ice cave takes their name from. The tour departs from the village of Vík where you will hop on a Super Jeep that takes you up to the ice cave. There you will put on crampons and a helmet to prepare you to walk inside the natural ice cave. Your expert guide will inform you all about the glacier and how the ice cave is formed by mother nature. - Driving time to Vík from Reykjavík is around 2 hours and 30 minutes in good road conditions. Traveler reviews
Beautiful ice cave
After booking an ice cave tour last year, we later discovered that the tour had been changed into one with an optional focus on drone footage of the surroundings. Had we known this in advance, we probably would not have booked it, and it would have been appropriate for Katlatrack to let us know. Fortunately, the other two guests had also booked well in advance. The tour itself was beautiful: a drive across a “vast black plain,” accompanied by interesting stories from the guide and, in particular, Icelandic music chosen to match each location. The walk across the glacier to the ice cave — or, more accurately, the ice tunnel — was enjoyable, but the real highlight was the tunnel itself, with its magnificent shades of blue.
Great Glacier Walk and Ice Cave Experience
This tour was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Iceland. The Super Jeep was large and comfortable and gave us the opportunity to see a part of Iceland not accessible by typical passenger cars. Edgar was our tour guide and he did a great job of explaining many aspects about Iceland that we could not have learned from a guide book or website. The walk on the Glacier was surreal and Edgar guided us every step of the way and ensured that we all had a safe experience. I would definitely recommend this tour.
Awesome Experience!!
Had SUCH a wonderful experience with this tour! Our guide Gabi was extremely knowledgable and friendly and so much fun to be around! He was full of great info and patience and was able to answer our many never ending questions! All in all, such an awesome time and so glad we booked this adventure!
Do this while you can
This is an extraordinary tour, offers everything it promises, but isn’t going to be available in the long term unless there are major changes. To get to the ice caves you need to put crampons over your hiking boots and then scramble up a landscape which is already crumbling. There will come a moment when the soft soil can no longer bear the weight of a body. It’s already deteriorating visibly. So go while you still can.
A perfect uniqe experience
It was an amazing experience. The views were spectacular and uniqe. The guide was wonderful, very knowledable, funny and professional. I recommend this to everyone.
