Good to know
- Church services may be held in the Bronx, however the tour will still cover the Harlem itinerary
- Shorts and tank tops are not allowed to be worn on this tour. Harlem Spirituals Inc. reserves the right to refuse clients improperly dressed and will not refund the service
- Soul Food is traditional African American cuisine that originated in the South in the United States. Today it has become a highly sought after cuisine. It consists of spicy ribs, collard greens, fried fish and chicken, freshly cooked corn bread, and a few side dishes like black eye peas, okra, or macaroni and cheese to mention a few.
- Guests are invited to take walks through the neighborhoods visited. The average walk is about 15 minutes.
- Accessibility Notice: Only foldable wheelchairs or walkers are permitted on board. These items will be stored in the luggage compartment of the bus. Please note that buses are not equipped with lifts. Passengers using a foldable wheelchair must be accompanied by someone who can assist them in boarding and disembarking the bus. We kindly ask that you notify us in advance—ideally up to 3 weeks before travel—if you will be traveling with a wheelchair, so we can best accommodate your needs.
Traveler reviews
The essentials are there but...
The gospel mass will remain a unique moment, which deserves the excursion. However, chance of the calendar probably, we almost did not get off the bus (impossible to visit the Apollo Theater, due to work, while it was also a wish .. and proposed to visit). Of course, the organizers are not responsible for the work, but they should compensate. The time "saved" seems to have been used to name all the buildings of the city we crossed on the return...
Excellent guide just some on and comments about the interpretation.
Guide was top notch. Knew a lot about it. What was disappointing was the gospel session in church, this one is too commercial. Pastor talks about money all the time and wants to raise as much as possible for the poor. Contrast is that there is a fat Maybach car outside in the pastor's parking lot. This is not possible! A lot is told by the guide about where to eat Soulfood in Harlem, but the tour will take you back to starting point and you will miss that experience. Luckily we got off in Harlem and walked around and enjoyed Soulfood.
Beautiful Experience in Harlem
Very interesting perhaps because we had an exceptional guide named Peggy. The gospel service is fabulous.
Amazing Experience!
Alvin was an absolutely incredible storyteller and knowledge sharer. Bubba drove us safely comfortably ,in an pleasantly air conditioned bus, all around New York. Our Schedule for the Day: Peace Fountain St John the Devine Church Sesame Street Sign Juilliard School of Music Drive through Upper East Side Apollo Theater (Walked Around) Keep the Faith Statue Hamilton Grange National Memorial (House, Walked Around) Hamilton Statue Morris-Jumel Mansion (Walked Around) 11:15am Church Service (Walked Around) Dropped off at 72nd and Broadway at 12:30pm Recommendations: bring water and a snack if you think you might get hungry between 9am and 1pm. There is no soul food option or food stops on the tour. Bring a fan if you think you might be hot, and a sweater if you think you might get cold.
Watch out! You will not be treated with respect!
Dealing with this organization was as bad a travel experience as I've ever had. My friend and I showed up at the address we were given at 3 minutes after the announced departure. Yes, we were late, but only three minutes. And there was no one there, no message from them asking us where we were, and no response when we called to find out how we could take the subway BACK uptown (we live in Harlem!), and join the tour. When I finally heard back from them, after CONSIDERABLE back and forth, they agreed to refund my $170, IN WRITING, in email, and then....nothing. They just disappeared. I have written them repeatedly, from abroad, to ask them to follow through on their promise to refund the money. Nothing. Ever. Be really wary with this company. My money is GONE, but yours doesn't need to be.
