Itinerary
Also known as the Altare della Patria, it is a monumental white marble structure in Piazza Venezia, dedicated to Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of unified Italy. Completed in the early 20th century, it celebrates Italy's unification and stands as a symbol of national pride. The monument houses the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, with an eternal flame, and offers stunning panoramic views of Rome from its rooftop. Its grand architecture, featuring Corinthian columns and statues, makes it one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city, though its imposing design has also sparked debate over the years.
Known for its stunning architecture, it features a blend of medieval and Renaissance elements, with beautiful frescoes, a notable wooden statue of the Madonna, and an impressive altar.
The square was the residence of Venetian ambassadors as well as being the grand finale of the Roman Carnival. It also holds historical significance as the location where Mussolini gave many of his speeches from the balcony of the Palazzo Venezia, his headquarter during Fascist rule.
It is one of the city's seven ancient hills, rich in history. The square was designed by Michelangelo and from its terrace you can enjoy stunning views of the Roman Forum and the Baroque city center, showcasing Rome’s political and artistic heritage.
