Itinerary
Guided Ascent of Carrauntoohil, Ireland's highest mountain: When you make an ascent with us you will not just be tagging along – we will share a wealth of historical, geological and natural history which these mountains have in abundance. We are very passionate about this area and it shows. Guests ages 16 and up can attend. It is worth mentioning before you proceed that any ascent of Ireland's highest mountain should only be undertaken if you feel you have the required level of fitness. You will be hiking over tough strenuous mountain terrain that does not have trails for at least 6 hours. The route is over 11 kmtrs long and within that there is 1000mtrs of ascent and decent! We have found that people have previously underestimated the climb so it is necessary to state this. Waterproof / windproof jacket and over trousers ( breathable fabric recommended but not essential ) Comfortable Clothing NO JEANS / DENIM Hiking Boots Fluid Packed Lunch Back Pack ( essential ) Spare Fleece / Warm Layer for the summit

An Epic Adventure
I booked the Guided Climb of Carrauntoohil with KerryClimbing.ie via the Devils Ladder for my 16 year old son and I having been waiting for years for the right conditions and available time. I knew this would be a challenge having researched some You Tube videos and gone through the Kerry Climbing website in lots of detail. Their booking process was easy and Catherine was immediately available and after some routine form filling we were confirmed on the guided tour. Instructions were clear and easy to follow. Time allowed for the ascent and decent were very accurate and their description of the climb as ‘difficult’ was also accurate. Set off time with our guide was on schedule and we had 12 in our group. On our particular day the mountain was very busy and we estimated maybe up to 1,000 people were on the mountain all day. The climb itself was tiring and I should have brought closer to 3 litres rather than the 1 litre of water I had. Also a few more snacks would have been welcome but both these items were down to me under estimating what I would need. All recommendations for footwear / clothing / food and water are well set out on the website and email communications. The descent was harder than the ascent due to the loose under foot stone conditions and the sheer number of people on the mountain was also a factor. It took us 7.5 hours from start to finish. Be under no illusion, we had wonderful conditions but this was still the hardest thing I ever put myself through and I would be regarded as very active. But the thrill of completing it outweighs all the soreness that followed in the couple of days after. Well worth the fee as the guide will provide you with lots of interesting facts and details during the many rest breaks throughout. I am very impressed with Kerry Climbing and our guide John Guerin was a gentleman and really added to the adventure. No pain no gain. An amazing full day which we will always remember with pride.
Highly recommend

Family climb!
Fantastic experience. Felt so much safer having a guide with us for the climb. Had 2 teenagers as part of our family group and the guide was fantastic with them. Would definitely recommend Pierce.
A thrilling time on the Cummeenapeasta Ridge
