Full description

Long lines at Florence's Duomo can eat up an entire morning. This walking tour uses priority access to get you inside first, with a guide on hand to explain the largest brick dome ever built and the history behind it. From there, the walk continues through Florence's grandest civic square and its old artisan quarter, ending at a bridge that has crossed the Arno for nearly 700 years. It's a compact, guided introduction to the historic center, built around getting the cathedral's biggest draw out of the way first, without the wait.

Long lines at Florence's Duomo can eat up an entire morning, especially in peak season. This small-group walking tour solves that with priority access, taking you inside the cathedral before the general admission line has even started moving.

Once inside, a guide explains how the dome overhead was engineered, still the largest brick dome ever built, using techniques that predate steel and modern scaffolding by centuries. You'll also hear the story behind the cathedral's marble facade, added generations after the dome itself was finished.

From there, the walk continues on foot through Florence's historic center. You'll pass the city's grandest civic square, the political stage of Florence for over 700 years, and walk streets once lined with Renaissance-era leather workshops and artisan stalls.

Along the way, a guide points out details most visitors walk straight past, from bronze doors depicting Old Testament scenes to the buildings that once anchored Florence's medieval guilds.

The tour ends at a landmark bridge that has crossed the Arno since the 14th century, still lined with the same small shops that have occupied it for generations.

This is a small-group tour, capped to keep the pace comfortable and the guide's commentary easy to hear throughout. Expect a moderate walking pace covering roughly 1.5 kilometers, with one dress code to keep in mind: shoulders and knees must be covered for cathedral entry, and heeled shoes or open sandals aren't permitted inside.
